Nice critique.  I'm going to add a statement at the start talking about wood
stability.  I think that as long as you let the wood rest for a week or two
after initial machining to rough that you can ensure the wood will stay
stable.  That's how the pros ensure solid wood table tops stay flat.  Thick
enough stock and a good finish will add to the stability as well.  Most hard
woods and some of the harder soft woods retain stability nicely when
properly treated.

The only thing I would strongly suggest is that you replace the rail with
square aluminum tubing. It may be a bit less "Crafty" but at least you are
100% sure it wont twist. The next thing I could say with this design is that
you got to be sure that the wood is very straight and stable (dry) choose
very carefully. L-shape standard in wood might be a problem if wood is not
the suitable kind.
