yes, you need the cross dev package. Very important.

i haven't tried building from the tarball in a while, it's probably easier to just pull a cvs tree. that way you can more easily generate patches using "cvs diff"

What do you mean "the build process never stopped"? What was it doing? Sitting there with zero output to the terminal? Sounds like it was trying to pull from cvs (the first stage of the build script).
