I've never really known what the whole disappearing site icons thing is about. Can't they just be cached somewhere (in this case, somewhere *else*) and restored?

Since we use mozilla's network layer to load and fetch them, they go in the mozilla cache. Short of rewriting that mechanism ourselves (why bother, it already works!) I'm not sure what else to do there.

Why do various activities cause them to go away?

A crash in camino causes the cache to be voided, the logic being that a crash white gecko was writing to the cache could corrupt the cache causing it to be unusable and result in unpredictable and untraceable crashes that we'd be chasing for years to come.

So crashing or force quitting camino in any way will void gecko's cache, and thus the site icons within.
