Awesome. I noticed this too, and it was enough to send me back to an older version. However, I did have a thought: instead of using completely different image files for the small versions, wouldn't it be possible to have the control detect whether its cell (if it's even using a cell, of course) is NSRegularControlSize or NSSmallControlSize and then resize its own image itself before drawing?

That's because the large icons are currently as they actually are drawn, whereas the small icons are created by the system using on-the-fly resizing. There will be a fix shortly to provide the system with both large and small versions, so no resizing will be necessary.
