About having command-shift-#? That would be nice and easy and not interfer with Safari.
Not a good idea: command-shift-3 and -4 are used for screenshots.
I used the keyboard preference pane to assign command-1 and command-2 to switch to the left and right tab - IMHO this is easier to use instead of counting the number of tabs ;-).
