This issue is caused by bug 325296 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325296>, as Wevah has already indicated.
The reason some people are seeing the box correctly is that bug 325296 is a trunk-only (and Mac-only) bug; everyone running "1.0+" builds will have the problem of the missing box, but everyone on the branch (1.0b2, 1.0b2+, 1.0rc1) will be able to see the search box without problem.
