Research has shown that the time of year that a person receives cholesterol testing may play a role in the results. In a study, people tended to have higher cholesterol readings in the winter than they did during the summer. If your readings were borderline high or borderline healthy, consider having them checked at a different time of year next time. If you are concerned about your cholesterol, speak with your healthcare provider. It is unclear how consistently or dramatically time of year may affect cholesterol levels. The effect may be only minimal. However, for borderline patients, the difference may be important. Researchers speculate that lower readings in the summer may be due to heightened activity levels during that season. Exercise can help improve cholesterol profiles. The seasonal fluctuations appear to be greatest in women, although men were affected as well in a recent study. 3.
