In 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression 
pact.  Hitler wanted to invade Poland, but he feared that such an 
action would spark a war with the U.S.S.R. The world was shocked 
when he negotiated this alliance with the Soviet leader, Joseph 
Stalin.  The two leaders even secretly agreed to divide Eastern 
Europe among their two countries.  This treaty with Russia gave 
Hitler the freedom to attack Poland, which he did on September 1, 
beginning World War II.  One year later Hitler would violate this 
treaty and invade the Soviet Union.

National Negro Business League.
