In 1765, in America, a mob demolished the home of Massachusetts
lieutenant governor Thomas Hutchinson. In an effort to raise
revenue, the English Parliament had passed the Stamp Act requiring
Americans to purchase special stamps for legal documents. The
colonists felt that they should have to right to assess their own
taxes and protests erupted over this and other revenue acts imposed
by England. In Boston, the "Sons of Liberty" burned the local stamp
distributor in effigy and a mob went on to burn the Hutchinson
home. After this, the English royal governors in American could no
longer take the ordinary people in the colonies for granted.
