More Windows XP SP2

So, I just installed SP2 on one of my machines at home--a
new home theater box I built over the weekend. It seems to
work OK, but I've got a big beef with it: It's become
NagWare. Every time I reboot the system, it keeps nagging me
to get anti-virus protection, or fix this, or adjust that.
It's like turning your operating system into your mom.
Sheesh, I even expect it to start nagging me to wear warm
clothes this winter, and to remember to see the dentist. If
you're looking for more information on SP2, don't miss our
special report that details everything you need to know
about this important XP update. We've also got a shocking
exposé of the hidden side of XP SP2, including new Wi-Fi
tools, IIS features and more. Plus, a special look at a back
door Microsoft didn't fix, and how it could compromise the
whole darn thing.

Google's Blogging Strategy Gets Clearer

So, how will Google continue to drive revenue, now that it's
public? On the backs of bloggers, apparently. To make its
blogging service more attractive, the search giant is
offering writers a cut of the pie-ad revenue! How will it
work? Is it a bribe or a partnership? Our story explores
what's up.

Retailers Eye Your Cell Phone

Imagine this: You walk into Best Buy, and your cell phone
starts buzzing. A quick look, and you see a special discount
on toner for your HP ink jet, but only if you buy right now.
You need toner, but the price is still a bit high. You SMS
back that you'll buy four if the price drops another 10
percent. Sold. You pick up your toner, flash the register as
you walk by--which automatically processes your credit card,
and out you go. This little scenario is a lot closer than
you might think! Our retail technology editor has uncovered
a fascinating new system that's just about ready to be
installed. His story details what it does, and how it'll
affect your shopping behavior.

Sometimes Free Is Too Expensive

That was my conclusion a few years ago when I first looked
at the Cue:Cat, a free scanner that was simply awful. Our
own David Coursey has revisited the notion, updating it to
fit bloggers and social-networking software. All of that
free stuff might be good now, but what happens when they
want to make money? Will your data be held hostage? Better
read his story if you're using any "free" services. You may
well be at risk.

Take Back Your File Associations

Don't you hate it when some program just unilaterally
changes your file associations--so all of your music opens
up in Windows Media Player, instead of MusicMatch, for
example? Well we've just released a utility that'll give you
back control of how Windows selects programs to open files.
In addition to locking down associations, it also lets you
easily change which program does what--on the fly
individually, and in groups via easy-to-manage profiles. The
program's not free--it'll cost you $5, or a $20 a year
subscription for close to 100 of our amazing utilities (what
a bargain!). Read our story about the new utility, and
decide for yourself if you want it!

Small Is Beautiful--Just Not Fast

That's our impression of the new mini motherboards using
Via's new processors. They make really tiny computers,
including a nifty, hardcover book-sized server and a PC
that'll fit in your pencil drawer. Just don't expect them to
win any land-speed records. We've gone deep inside the
Mini-ITX world to help you build small systems with at least
some performance.

How Waste Management Cut Costs

Route management may not be sexy, but it sure saves money.
That's what garbage hauler Waste Management discovered when
it applied nifty mathematics to its problem of how to pick
up the trash. Our case study dives into the dirty details of
just how the company saved money and maximized its fleet.
The details are fascinating, even if you only haul trash
from the kitchen to the curb.

NASCAR Champ Uses Tech to Gain Edge

Hendrick Motorsports is one of the leaders in providing
racing technology to NASCAR teams. But a recent problem in a
small metal part--the "pickup frame"--showed that IT can be
just as important as valves and pistons in winning races.
We've just finished an in-depth analysis of how Hendrick has
used information technology to supplement its leadership in
automotive technology. If you're a fan of racing, or IT,
don't miss our analysis.

New PSP Details Emerge

I'm dying to see how Sony crams a Playstation into a
handheld device the size of an iPod. I still haven't played
with one, but we just uncovered key new details about what's
inside. We've got an update on just how the tiny CPU at the
heart of the PSP will operate. For details on what that tiny
machine will do, don't miss our story.
