JUDAH, SLOT LOCKED IN EXPENSIVE COMMISSION RACE
Ray Judah has been the Lee County commissioner for District 3 since 1988. Jake Slot
says its time for a change. Judah and Slot are running the most expensive County
Commission race in Lee history, a race that for all practical purposes ends Tuesday.
There is a write-in candidate in the race, so only Republicans will get to choose
between Judah and Slot.

GOP NOTABLES, REV. GRAHAM PRAY WITH CHARLEY VICTIMS
Two weeks after Hurricane Charley slammed this community, the prayer service was to
show support for the weary. But it packed enough political clout to blow away the
party unfaithful. Gov. Jeb Bush and an entourage of GOP political heavyweights held a
prayer service Friday morning at the First Baptist Church of Port Charlotte, with
evangelical powerhouse Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, in tow.

FOOTBALL GAME TURNS INTO CHARITY DRIVE FOR SCHOOLS
The exhibition football game Friday between Barron Collier and DeSoto high schools
didnt count, but every bottle of water, can of food and dollar bill donated sure
will. With students, teachers and parents lined up at the main gate to accept
donations to help Barron Colliers opponent for the evening, the game turned into a
charity drive. But when DeSoto kicked off to start the game, the battle was as fierce
as a football game should be.

OPPONENTS, SUPPORTERS OF PROPOSED WAL-MART FACE OFF
A Wal-Mart Supercenter planned for Estero was met with sharp disapproval Friday from
some Estero residents who brought along petitions to a public hearing and from Lee
County staff who said the store would choke traffic along U.S. 41. Nearly 10 residents
rose to the podium in a chilly hearing room in downtown Fort Myers to express disgust
for the store, while more than 20 other residents voiced support during the nearly
eight-hour hearing.

CANDIDATES TO SUCCEED PORTER GOSS HAVE DIFFERENT FINANCIAL PRIORITIES
All four of the Republican candidates running to succeed Porter Goss in Congress are
pledging to bring federal money back to Southwest Florida. But their financial
priorities are somewhat different even though all tend to mention the same issues. The
District 14 candidates are former state Rep. Connie Mack, Naples doctor Frank
Schwerin, state Rep. Carole Green and former Lee County Commissioner Andy Coy.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
EDITORIAL: COLLIER SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT
When we first learned of Ben Marlins resignation on Tuesday, we were disappointed. We
were disappointed that Collier County Public Schools would miss his leadership on
programs he started during a busy first year as superintendent. We were disappointed
in Marlin himself, for making a mountain out of a molehill of criticism.

IN FLORIDA
JUDGE: TOUCHSCREEN COUNTIES MUST BE ABLE TO DO MANUAL RECOUNTS
A state rule barring the 15 Florida counties that use touchscreens from doing manual
recounts is at odds with state law, which requires hand recounts in certain close
elections, an administrative law judge ruled Friday. A coalition of government
watchdogs and other interest groups sued the state arguing the law requires provisions
for hand recounts in every county, no matter what voting technology is used.
