1. How Retailers Are Turning to Tech

>From Business Week (Topic: Retail), Aug. 31:
Newbie shoppers entering a Food Lion in Mooresville, N.C.,
might think they've come to the wrong place. The shop looks
more like an electronics emporium than a traditional grocery
store. Customers bustle about brandishing handheld scanners.
Information kiosks dish out maps on how to find any item,
such as that lattice pie crust hiding between aisles 7 and
8. And near the pharmacy, a high-tech blood-pressure monitor
takes shoppers' readings and keeps the data for a year.

2. Tech Execs More Optimistic About Spending-Study

>From Reuters (Topic: Spending), Aug. 30:
U.S. technology executives are increasingly optimistic about
the business climate, although plans for increased
technology spending remain modest, according to a study
released on Monday.

3. Supercomputer Seeks Comeback

>From Wired.com (Topic: Supercomputing), Aug. 30:
Vector supercomputers--the original mega-machines built for
crunching massive quantities of data--are once again widely
available in the United States. But it's unclear how long
they'll be in demand.

4. Microsoft Makes More Open-Source Overtures

>From eWeek (Topic: Open Source), Aug. 30:
Still feeling the pressure from Linux and other open-source
software competitors, Microsoft Corp. is reaching out
further to the open-source community with offers of joint
development and testing. But it's not yet clear if anyone is
ready to listen.

5. Reining in Tech

>From The San Francisco Chronicle (Topic: Innovation), Aug. 30:
When the original Napster program became an instant consumer
hit five years ago, it blindsided the music business. Today,
the entire entertainment industry--hoping to avoid being
caught off guard again--has stepped up efforts to nip
potential problems with emerging technologies in the bud,
before the public gets its hands on them.

6. Convention Boasts Miles of Technology

>From The New York Times (Topic: Republican National
Convention), Aug. 30:
(Registration Required)
The Republican National Convention has more than 40,000
miles of cabling to operate high speed computer systems,
telephone lines and live television broadcasts.

7. Tech Workers Stay Put as Economy Perks Up

>From USA Today (Topic: Staffing), Aug. 29:
Tech workers are holding on to their jobs tighter than they
have in more than 20 years. Just 8.9% of tech workers
willingly left their jobs last year, says an Aon Consulting
survey of 595 of the world's best-known tech firms,
including Microsoft, Cisco Systems and Intel. It was the
third year in a row that voluntary turnover dropped. "It's
as low as I've seen it, and I've been tracking these numbers
since the early '80s," says study author John Radford.

8. Nation's Voting Machines Tested in Secret

>From MSNBC.com (Topic: E-Voting), Aug. 23:
The three companies that certify the nation's voting
technologies operate in secrecy, and refuse to discuss flaws
in the ATM-like machines to be used by nearly one in three
voters in November.
