Former state Rep. Connie Mack IV won the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat in southwest Florida that his father held before becoming a two-term senator. MACK WINS GOP PRIMARY FOR GOSS� SEAT IN CONGRESS In a down-to-the-wire contest, Southwest Florida Republican voters chose Connie Mack IV to face Democrat Robert Neeld in the Nov. 2 general election for the District 14 seat in Congress. Neeld, 48, is a Cape Coral accountant and businessman. Mack took 27,526 votes, or 35.8 percent of the total, with state Rep. Carole Green coming in a close second, taking 24,767 votes or 32.2 percent. FLORIDIANS BRACE FOR HURRICANE FRANCES WEEKS AFTER CHARLEY As Southwest Floridians still worked to recover from damages left by Hurricane Charley less than three weeks ago, a menacing Hurricane Frances strengthened Tuesday in the Atlantic on a projected path that could wreak havoc in the state again, by Labor Day holiday weekend. The prospect of another powerful Category 4 hurricane, this one with top sustained winds of 140 mph, had people thinking of fleeing, or stocking up on food and water and buying plywood and hardware to fortify their homes. HIDEAWAY BEACH APPROVES BOND ISSUE FOR BEACH RENOURISHMENT Voters easily approved two Marco Island issues on Tuesday�s primary election ballot. Hideaway Beach residents overwhelmingly approved a maximum $2.9 million bond issue to pay for a beach renourishment project. They also agreed to pay a maximum property tax rate of $2.60 per $1,000 of taxable property value for 10 years to repay the bonds, unofficial final results late Tuesday showed. Secretary of State Glenda Hood said that when the last polls closed at 8 p.m. EDT, her office had no reports of major problems, even from election chiefs in populous Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and areas hit by Hurricane Charley. I had not visited San Miguel Allende for almost seven years and was amazed at the unexpected changes that had transpired since my last visit. The most startling change was in the plethora of fine restaurants that managed to integrate typical Mexican gastronomy with haute cuisine.
