Former state Rep. Connie Mack IV won the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat in southwest Florida that his father held before becoming a two-term senator. MACK WINS GOP PRIMARY FOR GOSS SEAT IN CONGRESS In a down-to-the-wire contest, Southwest Florida Republican voters chose Connie Mack IV to face Democrat Robert Neeld in the Nov. 2 general election for the District 14 seat in Congress. Neeld, 48, is a Cape Coral accountant and businessman. Mack took 27,526 votes, or 35.8 percent of the total, with state Rep. Carole Green coming in a close second, taking 24,767 votes or 32.2 percent. FORMER DEPUTY SCOTT UPSETS INCUMBENT SHOAP IN LEE SHERIFF GOP PRIMARY It started with whispers more than a year ago when then-deputy Mike Scott quietly resigned his post as coordinator for the Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers in the Lee County Sheriffs Office. As Tuesdays Republican primary election drew closer, Scotts green and yellow signage began to pop up all over Lee County. The whispers got louder as Scotts campaign coffers got fatter. FLORIDIANS BRACE FOR HURRICANE FRANCES WEEKS AFTER CHARLEY As Southwest Floridians still worked to recover from damages left by Hurricane Charley less than three weeks ago, a menacing Hurricane Frances strengthened Tuesday in the Atlantic on a projected path that could wreak havoc in the state again, by Labor Day holiday weekend. The prospect of another powerful Category 4 hurricane, this one with top sustained winds of 140 mph, had people thinking of fleeing, or stocking up on food and water and buying plywood and hardware to fortify their homes. JUDAH, HALL WIN PRIMARIES FOR LEE COMMISSION SEATS Ray Judah will in fact become the first Lee County commissioner elected to office five times, after blowing past challenger Jake Slot in a Republican primary runaway on Tuesday. With 174 of 175 precincts counted, Judah had 35,562 votes to Slots 18,309. Percentage-wise, Judah claimed 66.01 percent to Slots 33.99 percent. Still to be counted today are provisional ballots for people who changed precincts after the election books were closed. INCUMBENTS DOZIER, KUCKEL RETAIN LEE SCHOOL BOARD SEATS The old trumped the new in Tuesdays Lee County School Board race. Incumbents Jeanne Dozier, 52, representing District 2, and Jane Kuckel, 61, representing District 3, were able to hold onto their four-year, nonpartisan seats with 174 of 175 precincts reporting and 99.43 percent of the votes in late Tuesday night. Or all the other elephants hidden in the attic. Look only at the TV screen. Thats where were parading before your eyes every caring, compassionate, real and faux-moderate we can find here at our Grand Old Party convention. We know that winning in November requires a newer, kinder face (at least from August to November). A pro-independent and, especially, a pro-women face. Secretary of State Glenda Hood said that when the last polls closed at 8 p.m. EDT, her office had no reports of major problems, even from election chiefs in populous Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and areas hit by Hurricane Charley. I had not visited San Miguel Allende for almost seven years and was amazed at the unexpected changes that had transpired since my last visit. The most startling change was in the plethora of fine restaurants that managed to integrate typical Mexican gastronomy with haute cuisine.
