Parade of Microsoft Portable Media Centers

Here they come! Regular readers of this newsletter already
know how I feel about Microsoft's new handheld video
platform (I hate 'em). But today, three vendors officially
announced the new products, and we've got some pretty
laudatory reviews of two of them. Check out our PMC special
report for details, and if you want to know what how they
operate from the inside-out, our dissection of Creative's
Zen has all of the facts. In addition to the players, today
Microsoft rolled out its latest Windows Media Player,
with--hang onto your desk--native support for ripping MP3!

Lasers Enable the Best Mouse Ever

Optical mice were supposed to let you mouse on any surface,
free of mouse pads. But it didn't work out that way. They
were certainly better than balls, but not perfect. Logitech
kept trying, though, and it just released a very innovative
device--using a laser instead of just a light. For details
on how this laser-packing rodent actually works, and how
much it'll cost, read our review. This may very well be the
best mouse ever.

Intel to Highlight Performance at IDF

Next week's Intel lovefest in San Francisco will focus on
ways to wring even more performance from existing
technology. The move may presage a shift from Gordon Moore's
famous law to an approach focusing on wringing more from
existing technology. We've got a look at what else will be
going on, and stick with us next week as Intel's forum
progresses.

Fallout from Longhorn Breakup

Dropping WinFS has had some far-reaching consequences, we've
discovered. Digging deeper into "what it all means," our
Microsoft Watcher has uncovered even more anticipated
features that just won't make it into the next version of
Windows. What else is out in the cold? Read our story and
find out. Plus, an analysis of whether Microsoft did the
right thing by gutting Longhorn, and the results of an
unscientific survey of IT managers on what they think of the
whole shebang.

Social Networking Tries Moneymaking

One of the biggest social networks for professionals,
LinkedIn, is trying something new. It's actually going to
start charging its members for certain things. What a
concept--making money! Is this the beginning of the end of
free social networks? Will the gamble pay off? Our story
explores what's about to become paid, and what's likely to
become locked down in the future.

Browser War Winner: IE

Say what you want about Internet Explorer. It may be full of
more holes than Swiss cheese, and it certainly lacks
features many other browsers support, but that's just not
enough. According to PCMag.com top cheese Lance Ulanoff, IE
has won the war. It's the leader, and that's not going to
change. Why's he so optimistic (or pessimistic, depending on
your point of view)? His commentary presents the arguments
in a logical way, leading to the inevitable conclusion: IE
rules.

Why IE Rules:

Computer-Savvy Students Scare School IT

It's a growing problem. As more students become expert
programmers, and hackers, schools around the country are
seeing more and more break-ins. Dartmouth found itself in
that uncomfortable position back in late July, and more and
more schools will find themselves hacked--from the inside.
How big is the problem? And what can IT do about it? Our
story explores the issue, evaluates how academia is doing
today and presents some answers.

Moving from NT to Server 2003

It's on its last legs. Microsoft's Windows NT is losing
support, and let's face it: The OS is pretty long in the
tooth anyway. But how do you move all of your NT servers
over to the latest Microsoft server OS? We've just put
together a comprehensive guide on how to migrate, including
details on what applications will work (and which won't),
how to consolidate servers and where to find more help.
Don't touch those ancient servers without consulting our
reference guide first!

Multifunction Printers Compared

Looking for an inexpensive printer that can also fax, scan
and make copies? Amazingly, there are some pretty darn good
products for less than $200. We just pulled together our
three favorites, from HP, Brother and Canon. Amazingly, you
can get it all, and for a lot less than you think!

Flaws in Security Scheme Could Leave Networks Wide Open

The Kerberos key-based scheme for securing corporate
networks and other products has been compromised. It's
possible for a hacker to use these exploits to sneak inside
your system and wreak havoc. We've got details on what MIT
found, and how the holes could be exploited. Nothing's
happened yet, but you need to know about the problems if you
use Kerberos security.
