Some find time in shelters unbearable
PORT ST. LUCIE - There should have been cheers when Hurricane Frances' eye passed over
Stuart and Port St. Lucie early Sunday. It would have meant the torturous two-day wait
for Frances to pass through was nearly over. Instead, those who sought shelter at
Weatherbee Elementary School in Port St. Lucie dragged their feet up and down the
suffocatingly humid, dimly lit hallways.

Frances causes headaches in Lee, Collier
It wasn't Hurricane Charley. But Hurricane Frances' gusty, powerful winds still caused
many headaches for Lee County residents. The storm that never seemed to quit knocked
out power and phones Sunday. It virtually closed Southwest Florida International
Airport. And it has left residents and visitors driving on fumes and scrambling to
find gas. Yet, it didn't bring the floods and damage most feared.

Indian River County escapes major damage
VERO BEACH - When they finally left their crowded shelters on Sunday afternoon, the
residents of Florida's Treasure Coast found flooded roads, toppled street lights and
dark neighborhoods. Yet they soon saw that the homes and businesses in many of those
neighborhoods suffered relatively little structural damage. The aftermath of Hurricane
Frances left residents wondering if it would be remembered for torturing the state's
east coast and ruining a Labor Day weekend for millions.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
Editorial: Labor Day 2004
Labor Day weekend has several semi-official functions in the American calendar: End of
summer and the start of fall, football season and baseball's pennant drives. This
Labor Day weekend also plays its quadrennial role as the kickoff of the presidential
campaign, the time, as the political pundits have it, when the general public perks up
and starts paying attention to politics. Perhaps. But seemingly playing less and less
of a role is the reason for the holiday in the first place - a celebration of the
great American work force. And quite a work force it is.

IN FLORIDA
Hurricane 2004: Frances floods streets and knocks out power as it crosses Florida
FORT PIERCE - Hurricane Frances' wind and water whacked swaths of Florida with
fire-hose force Sunday, submerging entire roadways and tearing off rooftops even as
the storm weakened and crawled inland with heavy rain in its wake. More than 5 million
people lost power. More than 13 inches of rain fell along Florida's central east coast
and caused scattered flooding as a weakened Frances edged across the state toward
Tampa and the Gulf of Mexico. It left behind leveled trees and power lines, tangled
traffic lights and beachfront roads littered with coconuts, avocados and tree limbs.

IN NEAPOLITAN:

To God, With Love
There are those who've been known to wear their heart on their sleeve. Then there's
artist Ernesto Masis who wears his religion on his neck - actually, it's tattooed
there. It's a tiny, inky looking cross that peaks out from the collar of his shirt.
It's small, but it's there, clear as any cross can be. And it's rather fitting the
Costa Rican native sports this religious symbol as that's what this artist's latest
work is - a symbol of man's need for God.
