TODAY'S eTIP(TM): What's that Lump on My Dog?
Not every canine lump or tumor heralds the onset of cancer.
Plenty of abnormal swellings, lumps, or bumps are basically
harmless, or at least, not very serious. If your senior dog is
diagnosed with one of the tumors in the following list, you can
rest easy.
* Lipomas: These soft, spongy lumps are nothing more than
a harmless accumulation of fat cells and are often
called "fatty tumors." Lipomas usually don't appear
until a dog is middle-aged or older.
* Warts: If your dog develops one or more lumps that look
like cauliflower, chances are he has plain old warts.
They're not serious, but you can't do much about them,
other than let nature take its course. Sometimes,
however, a growth that looks like a wart can be a
cancerous tumor, so have your vet look at any wart your
pooch has.
* Hematomas: A blood-filled lump may appear on the ear of
a dog who's been shaking her head a lot, and has thus
caused fragile blood vessels to break. This lump, or
hematoma, needs a vet's attention, not only to drain
the lump itself but also to deal with the ear infection
or parasites that may have triggered the head-shaking
in the first place.
* Sebaceous cysts: These red bumps may remind you of the
zits you may have had as a teenager, but they're
completely different. Sebaceous cysts aren't filled
with pus; they're filled with keratin (a protein that
looks a bit like cheese). They're not serious, but they
can be uncomfortable, so have your vet either drain the
cysts or remove them altogether.
Remember, however, that even if a lump appears to be harmless,
you need a vet's evaluation to confirm your hunch. If your senior
dog sports a lump you haven't seen before, call your vet.
