TACIT I-SHARED BRINGS WELCOME RELIEF TO OVER-THE-WAN FILE SHARING
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

Sharing files with users at remote offices over a WAN often creates
enormous headaches, due to limited bandwidth and the high latency of the
connection, combined with the "chattiness" of file sharing protocols
such as NFS and CIFS.

RADIANT LOGIC, MAXWARE GIVE DIRECTORIES A VIRTUAL TWIST
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

Metadirectories and SSO (single sign-on) products tend to garner much of
the attention in the directory arena, but directory virtualization is
closing in. Virtual directories take data from multiple sources,
including other directories and databases, and present that data as a
single virtual directory. Rather than move data into a new database or
directory, which is what a metadirectory does, the virtual directory
presents data as links. As you might expect, a virtual directory could
serve as a core component of an identity-based network infrastructure
(see "Toward a Federated Future," page 44).

FORUM XWALL PROVIDES POWERFUL PROTECTION FOR WEB SERVICES
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

Safeguarding Web services is a lot like protecting your Web-based
applications from attack. The current crop of application-layer security
solutions can look for malformed Web traffic, URL tampering, and the
like, but it does not look deep into SOAP messages or scrub XML for
malicious content, thus leaving Web services exposed.

BETTER SECURITY THROUGH IDENTITY
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

The old "separate nations" network paradigm -- decentralized security in
which multiple departments using various applications manage access as
each sees fit -- is now passe. Security systems are going global, as
enterprises increasingly turn to identity management solutions from
vendors such as IBM, Netegrity, Novell, and Oblix as a means to better
align network policies and permissions with business goals, not just
IT's ideas of how a system should be managed.
