Virtual directories take data from multiple sources, including other directories and databases, and present that data as a single virtual directory. Rather than move data into a new database or directory, which is what a metadirectory does, the virtual directory presents data as links. As you might expect, a virtual directory could serve as a core component of an identity-based network infrastructure (see "Toward a Federated Future," page 44). The current crop of application-layer security solutions can look for malformed Web traffic, URL tampering, and the like, but it does not look deep into SOAP messages or scrub XML for malicious content, thus leaving Web services exposed. Security systems are going global, as enterprises increasingly turn to identity management solutions from vendors such as IBM, Netegrity, Novell, and Oblix as a means to better align network policies and permissions with business goals, not just IT's ideas of how a system should be managed.
