Hosting Forums Answer Uncertainties

By Jay Lyman

September 9, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The hosting industry's forums are
typically peppered with questions from newbies and seasoned pros alike,

but many recent discussions dealt with particular uncertainties, like the content
clients actually have on their sites, how prominent PayPal should be, loss

of customers, and the impact of Microsoft's Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.

One uncertainty brought to light in a recent WebHostingTalk post centered on a host
who was worried that high traffic to a customer's Arabic language site

might be trouble. The questioner indicated that although things seemed on the up and
up, the site's owner was elusive as to its content, prompting even more

worry on the part of the host. However, through the help of the forums, the
uncertainty was extinguished. Arabic-speaking respondents checked the site in

question and found it to be basically poems, business and technology content.

The questions regarding the Arabic site raised the ire of some posters who argued it
was unfair and also un-American, at least in the sense of free speech,

to contemplate terminating a client contract based on content. However, the original
question and subsequent explanations indicated that the site owner's

reluctance to discuss the site's content combined with a foreign language that could
not be easily checked was the real cause of concern. The up-side to this

uncertainty was that it was promptly and professionally handled, and showed that Web
hosts can look out for one another, particularly on such sticky matters.

Another uncertainty, which unsurprisingly turned into a hosting new school/old school
debate among the younger set newest to the industry and the established

veterans of the Web, centered on PayPal.

The point made by another WebHostingTalk poster was that just because a hosting outfit
accepts only PayPal, it should not be labeled fly-by-night. There was

disagreement as to whether PayPal should simply play a role, albeit more prominent for
some, in an array of payment options, or whether the security and

simplicity made PayPal an adequate single solution.

In terms of judging a host by its payment options, Web hosts seemed to agree that
other factors - such as pricing, history, and whether a sweet-sounding

motherly figure answers the phone after an IP trackdown - would provide a more
complete profile of a Web host.

The next recent uncertainty centered on the movement of customers, with a HostHideout
poster wondering whether other hosts had noticed a correlation between

domain name renewal times and customer loss. There was some consensus that there was,
in fact, a correlation. Advice to address the uncertainty, and the

customer leakage, included: offering trinkets to find out why clients walk away;
offering a free month or service to retain customers; free domain renewal;

and rolling with customer flow.

While posters repeatedly questioned the movement of customers given the time and
trouble of changing hosts, most agreed that factors such as price, uptime

and reliability tend to push people among different providers. Personal sites can also
come and go as a result of factors such as loss of interest, or

boyfriend, or dog, posters in the thread said. There was more certainty in business
clients, they agreed, who, if supported and maintained adequately, are

much less likely to leave.

Arising on the SitePoint forums was another uncertainty for Web hosts, as well as
anyone else who works with Windows XP computers, was the impact of

Microsoft's SP2 major update. There was consensus that the install was relatively
straightforward, but there was also a fair share of conflict, as forecast

by Microsoft and many application vendors.

One of the issues involved a VPN that was conflicted by SP2 to the point of cutting
off access to all servers for one poster. However, an uninstall proved

both successful and smooth, the poster said.

There was also some debate as to whether Microsoft's new, default-enabled firewall was
as effective or worthwhile as others such as ZoneAlarm, with the

latter winning the bulk of praise, particularly in light of problems presented by the
SP2 firewall. Another common problem appeared to be an unnecessary

notification to update antivirus definitions, which could be turned off.

On the brighter side, there were reports of improved performance, particularly for
wireless setups on the updated Windows XP. However, the uncertainty of

many hosts and users was summed up by one poster, who said: "I spose [sic] I should
really do the update, but it's taken me such a long time to get both my

computers (and the rest of my house network) all set up and running as I want it, I'm
a little scared about breaking it all."
