September 16, 2004 on this day:  

In 1963, during the American Civil Rights Movement, a bomb planted 
by members of the Klu Klux Klan exploded outside of the Sixteenth 
Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.  Four Black girls 
inside the church were killed.  This act of extreme violence 
received near universal condemnation across the United States.  
Although only a handful of people died during the Civil Rights 
Movement, incidents such as these played a key role in turning 
Northern opinion toward the cause.

In 1935 the German government, controlled by the Nazi Party, 
adopted the swastika as its national flag.
