Database Update
=========================================================
News: Database Sales Feed Oracle Growth
Oracle Database 10g is the prime reason why
first-quarter net income was up 16 percent at
Oracle, executives reported this week. That
growth wasn't helped much by Oracle's limping
applications sales, which brought in $69 million,
or 36 percent less than last year at this time.
Meanwhile, new software license revenue dropped
10 percent.

2. News: New Oracle Exec Takes Over On Demand Biz
Oracle's getting more serious about On Demand,
spending more on marketing and development and
appointing Juergen Rottler as EVP of its On Demand
business. Rottler comes from HP, where he was SVP
of HP's public sector, health and education business.

3. News: Judge Rejects DOJ's ERP Market Definition
Oracle emerged victorious over the DOJ when
Judge Walker delivered his verdict last week.
In his ruling, Walker denied the DOJ's request
for an injunction to block Oracle's takeover of
PeopleSoft, citing issues with the DOJ's
description of the software market.

4. News: Oracle's $21/Share PeopleSoft Offer Is
Just the Starting Point, Financial Analysts Say
The company's pockets are plenty deep
enough to pull out more money when it
comes to the never-ending saga of acquiring
PeopleSoft, according to financial analysts.

5. Opinion: Microsoft Deserved What It Got in Oracle-DOJ Verdict
Microsoft Watch's Mary Jo Foley says that
Judge Walker has proved in his Oracle-DOJ
verdict that he's not gullible when it comes to
swallowing Microsoft's testimony during the trial.
Microsoft testified it had no plans to enter the
enterprise market for ERP in spite of having
purchased ERP vendors. That premise fell apart
when it was revealed that backroom discussions
took place regarding Microsoft's potential purchase of SAP.

6. Opinion: Is It Time for PeopleSoft to Hang It Up?
eWEEK.com's Enterprise Applications Editor
John Pallatto says PeopleSoft may wind up
forced into Oracle's arms if this drawn-out
takeover battle keeps disrupting business and
distract management.
