It's absolutely normal, although sometimes annoying, for ferrets to steal small objects and carry them off to their secret hidey-holes. Remember, their name appropriately means "thief." Purses, pockets, and backpacks are frequent targets for ferret raids. If you value anything they may steal, such as car keys, shoes, and jewelry, keep these items up high or out of the ferret's play area altogether. Hoarding is one of the ferret's most endearing traits, but it can lead to trouble. One ferret may favor certain items while another favors completely different items. Some stolen items are big, while others are dangerously small. Remember this characteristic about your ferret when you go about ferret-proofing. Small items can be ingested and cause blockages.
