Today's focus: VoIP success story

By Steve Taylor and Larry Hettick

In recent newsletters we've been examining problems encountered
in VoIP implementations that sometimes lead to a lack of
satisfaction. This time, we have a success story.

Ned Roehrig, who works in the Bell County Information Systems in
Belton, Texas, tells us his organization recently experienced,
"as put by one of our retired district judges who was stuck in
an elevator when the motor caught fire, one of those flat tires
on the road of life."

Says Roehrig:

"This fire resulted in the closing of the Belton District Courts
building Friday, Aug. 27, around noon. No injuries or major fire
damage, but significant smoke, hydraulic fluid (elevators are
hydraulic in our four-story building) and water damage. This
facility was home to 85 employees and four courtrooms. Thanks to
a few terrific employees and our one-year-old VoIP phone system,
we relocated 65 phones, two servers and 40 desktops into nine
locations in five of our other facilities in Belton with only 42
person-hours of effort.

"This would not have been possible without our 3Com NBX VoIP
system. All departments were open for business on Monday, Aug.
30, and court hearings went on as scheduled in other locations
in town. Having everything on one network (our facilities are
all fiber connected) made this effort very easy and very
inexpensive. A couple of spare switches and a few cables and we
were back in business. Zero phone configuration or network
configuration was required to meet this challenge."

Thanks to Ned for sharing this with us. This type of flexibility
for rapid moves, adds, and changes clearly demonstrates one of
the major advantages that VoIP brings.
