SENATE CONFIRMS GOSS AS NEW CIA DIRECTOR
WASHINGTON The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Porter Goss as the next director
of Central Intelligence, charging the Sanibel Republican with the enormous task of
rebuilding a community under immense criticism for producing flawed evidence prior to
the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq. Legislators from both
parties expectedly used the debate over Goss' qualifications for the post to make
broader political statements about which party is best suited to handle national
security as a presidential election looms just six weeks away.

JEWISH STUDENTS PROTEST HOMECOMING ON YOM KIPPUR
Allison Freeman will end Yom Kippur, the most sacred day of the Jewish year, with her
friends at the Da Ru Ma Japanese Steakhouse, then head to the Barron Collier High
School homecoming dance. Never in her life has Allison broken the holy day of fasting
and prayer on the Day of Atonement in such an unholy way. "My religion is very

WORK STARTS ON CONTROVERSIAL OVERPASS PROJECT
John Skiles was all smiles as he gleefully talked about the county finally getting
down to building the Golden Gate Parkway overpass. This week, pine trees along Golden
Gate Parkway were being chopped down as construction of the controversial project
kicked off. Plans call for the first walls for the overpass that will elevate the

PRESIDENT'S PUSH
A report four years in the making, aimed at cleaner oceans, is on President Bush's
desk. It has to compete for attention with a war and national security. So, what else
is new? Important business seldom percolates in a vacuum and there always is
competition for highest-level attention and money. What the president can do that is
different this time is do the right thing especially for an important election state
such as Florida and send the report by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy on its
way to implementation. Mr. President, surprise us.

RESTAURANTS, RETAILERS SAY AMENDMENT IMPERILS JOBS
A proposed constitutional amendment to raise the state's minimum wage would send

prices and reducing employee benefits, according to a survey released Wednesday by
amendment foes. But some local restaurant and store owners disagreed with the survey's
findings, saying their businesses wouldn't suffer much, with some saying they pay
their employees more than the current $5.15 hourly federal minimum wage.
