Job guarantee: Bengal says Objection, Comrades
Guess which is the first state government to ask for a relook at the proposed National
Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which the Left has been pushing to prioritise? The
Left Front government of West Bengal. The draft Act, posted on the web, has provoked
West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta to meet his partys politburo members
Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury in New Delhi.

To balance Ministers trip to Arafat, PM sits with US Jewish leaders
Hours after he spoke at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met
representatives of the American-Jewish community this afternoon. But, as sources here
confirmed, the meeting was neither an accident nor a generality but more of a
balancing act. Because less than a fortnight ago, Minister of State for External
Affairs E Ahamed had travelled to Palestine where he met Palestinian president Yasser
Arafat and Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie.

At UN, Singh returns the Generals compliments
Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs invocation to the free market yesterday gave way to
the expression of multilateral good today when he praised the role of the UN in
moderating the excessive enthusiasm of countries, as in Iraq, and formally staked
Indias claim to a permanent seat in an expanded Security Council.

On VAT, at least, a step forward as FM promises to pay
Finally, an issue on which most parties saw eye to eye. After the cracks on FDI limits
and the disagreement over inviting outsiders to review the Tenth Plan progress,
most State Finance Ministers signalled that they were ready with their Bills on VAT
even as Finance Minister P Chidambaram promised to fully compensate them for any loss
in revenue in the first year after they switched to the new system from April 2005.

CBI wades in babus Rs 2.75-cr cash
Its probably the biggest seizure of cash ever from an Indian bureaucrat facing

Daughters murder cloud, no rain on Bibi parade
Taint may be the bitter flavour of the political season but that hasnt come in the
way of Bibi Jagir Kaur. Accused by the CBI in the alleged murder and abduction of her
daughter, Jagir Kaur was back today to start her third innings as the 39th president
of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Her second was cut short following the
criminal case against her over the mysterious death of her daughter Harpreet.
