IBM and PeopleSoft Hook Up
Could IBM be Peoplesoft's white knight? A just-announced deal
will pump 1 billion dollars into building a middleware layer
inside PeopleSoft's applications. That's a lot of money,
even for Dr. Evil! Our team coverage analyzes the deal
itself, and what customers think of it (hint: giddy as
schoolgirls).

SP*M Setback
If you thought the Internet Engineering Task Force would
finally figure out a way to fix the obnoxious flow of nasty
e-mails, you'd be wrong. They had been working on adding mail
authorization into DNS, but now it's all over. Was its
recent squabble with Microsoft to blame? Our story explores
the demise.

Microsoft Gives Office Code to Governments
Worried about what's inside Office 2003? If you're a small
third world country, you're invited to visit Redmond and
wade through the source code yourself! Sounds like a fun
trip, eh? Find out why Office has been added to the
Government Security Program, and what it really means to at
least one municipality (Munich) in our story.

Hard Disk Industry Poised for Consolidation
Our insatiable appetite for digital media should mean smooth
sailing for hard disk vendors like Maxtor and Western
Digital. But instead, those companies are mired in red ink.
Why? According to our report from a recent industry confab,
seven vendors is just too much--and consolidation is the only
way to profitability. Read our story for all the details--
fewer manufacturers could actually lead to higher prices.

More on Kerry and Bush
What's Bush afraid of? PCMag head honcho Michael Miller
recently exchanged e-mails with the Kerry campaign on a
number of tech issues, while the Bush folks pointed Miller
to their candidate's Web site. So he did the best he could to
uncover both Kerry and Bush's technology agenda. After
reading that analysis, take another look at our poli-tech
analyst's discussions with major Venture Capital backers of
the two: Gorenberg on Kerry and Draper on Bush

How I Built a 64-Bit Computer
Recently I sat down to put together a fast, fast, fast
64-bit computer. Now I've built a number of systems, but
never a 64-bit version. Of course there's not much special
I can do with it, but the journey was certainly half the
reward. Of course I made way too many trips to the store
(forgot the darn CPU cooler), but it was fun. If you're
thinking of building a system--or just want to laugh at my
dumb mistakes--don't miss my blow-by-blow story!

Do You Feel More Secure?
The results of our survey are in, and sadly the answer is
no. We asked a broad cross section of CIOs whether they're
better or worse this year--and they are not. Check out
what's keeping them up at night--including cyberterrorism,
e-mail threats and other nasty topics.
