THE FOUNDATION

"[A] wise and frugal government...shall restrain men from injuring
one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their
own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from
the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of
good government." --Thomas Jefferson

______----********O********----______
THE PATRIOT PERSPECTIVE

Top of the fold -- John Kerry, Useful Idiot...

"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of
the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of
expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their
constituents...." --James Madison

Nineteenth-century historian Alexis de Tocqueville once observed,
"Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word:
equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality
in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude."

Tocqueville was commenting on liberty and free enterprise, American
style, versus socialism as envisioned by emerging protagonists of
centralized state governments. And he saw on the horizon a looming
threat -- a threat that would challenge the freedoms writ in the
blood and toil of our nation's Founders.

Indeed, a century after Tocqueville penned those words,
elitist Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt tossed aside much
of our nation's Constitution. Though its author, James Madison,
noted in Federalist Paper No. 45 that "The powers delegated by
the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and
defined [and] will be exercised principally on external objects,
as war, peace, negotiation and foreign commerce," FDR summarily
redefined the role of the central government by way of myriad
extra-constitutional decrees, and greatly expanded the central
government far beyond the strict limits set by our Constitution.

FDR, perhaps unwittingly, used the Great Depression to establish
a solid foundation for socialism in America, as best evidenced
in this dubious proclamation: "Here is my principle: Taxes shall
be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American
principle."

If Roosevelt's "American principle" sounds somewhat familiar,
then you're likely a student of history (or The Patriot). Not to
be confused with the Biblical principle in the Gospel according
to Luke, "From everyone who has been given much, much will be
required...", which the Left often cites as justification for
socialist policies, Roosevelt was essentially paraphrasing the
gospel according to Karl Marx, whose maxim declared, "From each
according to his abilities, to each according to his needs."

Notably, the Bible places the burden of responsibility for
stewardship on the individual, while Marx and FDR placed the
burden of responsibility for stewardship on the state. In failing
to discern this distinction, FDR set the stage for the entrapment
of future generations by the welfare state and the incremental
shift from self-reliance to dependence upon the state -- ultimately
the state of tyranny.

English writer, sociologist and historian H.G. Wells, whose last
work, The Holy Terror, profiled the psychological development
of a modern dictator based on the careers of Stalin, Mussolini
and Hitler, said of Roosevelt's reign, "The great trouble with
you Americans is that you are still under the influence of that
second-rate -- shall I say third-rate? -- mind, Karl Marx."

More to the point, Soviet dictator Nikita Khrushchev said of
Roosevelt's "New Deal" paradigm shift, "We can't expect the
American people to jump from capitalism to communism, but we
can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses
of socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have
communism."

Clearly, Khrushchev was onto something. FDR never embraced
self-reliance as the essential ingredient of a free society, nor
have his Demo-successors Ted Kennedy and John Kerry. Why? Perhaps
it's because these men inherited their wealth, their privilege
and their political office. Indeed, while Kerry's handlers
might try to cast their candidate as a man of the people,
he is anything but. Remember, this is a man who has twice
married multimillionaire heiresses; a man who has multiple
mansions on multiple continents; a man who windsurfs (poorly)
off tony Nantucket; a man who rides a bicycle that costs more
than some new cars; a man who spends, oh, maybe $15,000 to jet
his hairdresser cross country for a trim. Yes, John Kerry is the
latest in a line of "inheritance-welfare liberals" -- those who
were raised dependent on inheritance rather than self-reliance. Is
it any wonder, then, that the character and values of these
inheritance-welfare liberals are all but indistinguishable from
the character and values of those who depend on state welfare?

Today, more than 70 years after FDR seeded American socialism,
the Soviet Union is but a memory. In addition, China and most
other states with centralized economies (Cuba notwithstanding)
are undergoing a dramatic shift toward free-enterprise -- as well
as the political challenges that accompany such a shift.

Yet despite the collapse of socialism around the world,
inheritance-welfare liberals, chief among them John Kerry, still
dominate the Democrat Party and continue to advocate all manner of
dependence upon the state (the poor man's trust fund). V.I. Lenin
knew precisely what he was talking about when he famously dubbed
Western Leftists "useful idiots."

As this Election Day approaches, we're left to wonder whether
America has learned its lessons, or whether our great nation is
still under the spell of its useful idiots. Here in our humble
shop, we hope that an American majority will reject the candy of
the inheritance-welfare liberals, will restore our Constitution as
the central authority of the land, and will reclaim self-reliance
as the central character of our people.

Quote of the week...

"And one of the responsibilities as President is understanding
the strength of the country lies in the hearts and souls of the
citizens. It's really not in the halls of our government. See,
that's not where the strength of the country is. It's in the souls
of the people. And if you understand that, then you're able to
utilize the great power of the presidency to rally that strength,
to call people to a higher calling." --President George W. Bush

>From the Bush campaign journal...

Making tax cuts permanent, a cornerstone of the President's fiscal
policy, will reduce government revenue by $1 trillion over the
next ten years, which is to say that it will leave more money
in the hands of those who earn it. That's good policy. Ronald
Reagan's legacy is, in part, that the U.S. economy accounted for
one fifth of the global economy in 1980, but one THIRD of global
economy today. This was due in great measure to the tax-cuts he
enacted because lower rates resulted in greater economic activity
which resulted in much larger tax revenues.

However, upon accepting his re-nomination at the Republican
National Convention, President Bush laid out a laundry list of
costly social spending measures for the next four years. Fiscal
conservatives are reeling at the $3-trillion price tag of the
President's ambitious agenda. The Bush campaign team has said
little about how the President plans to pay for it all, but
government agencies have been put on notice to expect budget
cuts for 2006, pending the President's re-election. From where
the funding for his initiatives will come, however, remains
a mystery. As we noted two years ago, the enormous government
restructuring after 9/11 exposed the extent of useless overlap
between agencies -- perhaps this will be prime for cutting.

Meanwhile, the federal deficit continues to grow, reaching $422
billion this year alone.

Memo to President Bush: We note above a reference to the
Constitutional limitations on the role of the central government
as made plain by its author James Madison in Federalist
Paper No. 45. Neither The Federalist Patriot, nor our loyal
Patriot readers, intend to become oxymoronic "big-government
conservatives."

In other campaign news, President Bush's handlers settled on
three debates with John Kerry. The first, on 30 September, will
focus on foreign policy and homeland security. The second, on 8
October, will be a town-hall-style forum open to any topics, but
all questions will be screened by the moderator. The final debate,
on 13 October, will concentrate on the economy. The Patriot will
bring you our analysis of each debate, and unless President Bush
trips over his Texas strut, which he tends to do in unscripted
events, he will likely gain support as a result of the first
debate, which is always the most-watched of the debates. If he
stays on topic in the second and third, he will do well.

Perhaps President Bush will use the third debate to clear up
questions about how he plans to fund his slate social spending.

>From the JFK DEMO-lition derby...

No matter how hard John Kerry tried to change the subject this
week, he couldn't compete with CBS talkinghead Dan Rather's
"Memogate" fiasco.

Indeed, last week saw Dan Ratherbiased officially unmasked as the
"Democrat National Committee's Commissar of Propaganda." And this
week, we're learning that the now-debunked documents that Rather
paraded before the nation two weeks ago are not only linked to
vindictive Demo-operatives in Texas, but also to CBS producer
Mary Mapes. She packaged the story for Rather and put the unnamed
source of the documents (a loopy Bush-hater named Bill Burkett)
in touch with former Clinton mouthpiece Joe Lockhart, now a top
Kerry advisor. It appears that Mapes' and Burkett's objective was
to ensure the Kerry camp was ready to promote the scandal as soon
as CBS broke the story. But the law of unintended consequences
prevailed because the story itself was broke -- making CBS and
its links to the Kerry campaign the real scandal.

While it's unlikely that a legal case will ever be made, it appears
that Rather and Mapes were bent on advancing this lie, come hell
or high water. They disregarded vehement objections from both the
widow and the son of the supposed author, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian,
both of whom disputed the memos' authenticity. They disregarded
denials from Killian's former secretary, said to have typed the
memos. They disregarded their own "document experts" who warned
that the memos were likely "forgeries."

Of course, calling these documents "forgeries" implies they were
facsimiles of something that actually exists. These documents
were fabrications -- BIG difference.

When challenged about the documents' authenticity last week,
Rather told CNN: "I know that this story is true. I believe that
the witnesses and the documents are authentic. ... There isn't
going to be... there's no... what you're saying apology? [No
apology] was even discussed, nor should it be. I want to make
clear to you, I want to make clear to you if I have not made
clear to you, that this story is true, and that more important
questions than how we got the story, which is where those who
don't like the story like to put the emphasis, the more important
question is what are the answers to the questions raised in the
story, which I just gave you earlier." Spoken like a Rather
biased news reader! (To see Dan's last stand, link here --
http://kerry-04.org/photos/view.php?photo=baghdad_dan.jpg )

This week, however, Gunga Dan changed his tune: "If I knew then
what I know now, I would not have gone ahead with the story...and
I certainly would not have used the documents in question. But
we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for
that I am sorry. ... Please know that nothing is more important
to us (cue laugh track) than people's trust in our ability and
our commitment to report fairly and truthfully."

We know it's hard to believe, fellow Patriots, but Dan Rather
really uttered that last sentence -- and with a straight face,
no less!

Rather continued: "I have confidence that those people who don't
have a specific partisan political or ideological agenda will
understand what happened, how it happened, and I think they have
confidence in CBS's credibility and my own. I do have a lifetime
of reporting."

Once again with a straight face!

Switching gears, it seems Dan Rather pulled his foot out of
Kerry's mouth just in time for Michael Moore to insert his. In
a diatribe salute to Kerry's Hollywonk cadre this week, Moore
writes: "Look at us -- what a bunch of crybabies. Bush gets
a bounce after his convention and you would have thought the
Germans had run through Poland again. The Bushies are coming,
the Bushies are coming! ... If I hear one more person tell me
how lousy a candidate Kerry is and how he can't win... Dammit,
of COURSE he's a lousy candidate -- he's a Democrat, for heavens
sake! The Party is so pathetic, they even lose the elections they
win! What were you expecting, Bruce Springsteen heading up the
ticket? Bruce would make a helluva president, but guys like him
don't run -- and neither do you or I. People like Kerry run. Yes,
OF COURSE any of us would have run a better, smarter, kick-ass
campaign. Of course we would have smacked each and every one of
those phony swifty boaty bastards down. But WE are not running
for president -- Kerry is."

Moore continued: "My friends, it is time for a reality
check. ... Kerry has brought in the Clinton A-team. Instead of
shunning Clinton (as Gore did), Kerry has decided to not make
that mistake. ... So, do not despair. All is not over. Far from
it. ... Just for me, please? Buck up. The country is almost back
in our hands. Not another negative word until Nov. 3rd! Then
you can b**** all you want about how you wish Kerry was still
that long-haired kid who once had the courage to stand up
for something. Personally, I think that kid is still inside
him. Instead of the wailing and gnashing of your teeth, why not
hold out a hand to him and help the inner soldier/protester come
out and defeat the forces of evil we now so desperately face. Do
we have any other choice?"

At risk of alienating a few readers, we have to agree with Moore
on this one. Indeed, that "long-haired kid"...is still inside
Kerry. You can find everything you need to know about John Kerry
at -- http://kerry-04.org/
Our readers tell us our site is the Internet's most comprehensive
resource on THE REAL JFK. Kerry-04.org is updated constantly,
and it features dozens of great photos of "The Johns." We have
only a few short weeks in which to ensure the defeat of John
Kerry, so please visit http://kerry-04.org/ and send the link
 to all your friends.

On cross-examination...

"At the root of what is today treated as an embarrassing blunder by
duped CBS journalists may turn out to be a felony by its faithless
sources. ...[That person] then helped cause the fraudulent file to
be transmitted by means of television communication to millions
of voters for the purpose of influencing a federal election --
[which is] no mere 'dirty trick,' but a potential violation of
federal law." --William Safire

The BIG lie...

"Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator who deserves his own special
place in hell. But that was not, in itself, a reason to go to
war." --John Kerry

Oh really? A few short months ago, Kerry professed: "Saddam
Hussein took us to war once before. In that war, young Americans
were killed. He went to war in order to take over the oil fields.
It wasn't just an invasion of Kuwait. He was heading for the oil
fields of Saudi Arabia. And that would have had a profound effect
on the security of the United States. This is a man who has used
weapons of mass destruction, unlike other people on this Earth
today, not only against other people but against his own people.
This is a man who tried to assassinate a former president of
the United States, a man who lobbed 36 missiles into Israel in
order to destabilize the Middle East, a man who is so capable of
miscalculation that he even brought this war on himself. This is
a man who, if he was left uncaptured, would have continued to
be able to organize the Ba'athists. He would have continued to
terrorize the people, just in their minds, because of 30 years
of terror in Iraq."

More to the point, Kerry said, "Those who doubted whether Iraq or
the world would be better off without Saddam Hussein and those
who believe today that we are not safer with his capture don't
have the judgment to be president."

We second that motion!

And the runner up...

"If George Bush were to be re-elected -- given the way that he
has gone about this war, and given the avoidance of responsibility
in North Korea, Iran and other places -- it is possible [that he
would re-instate the draft]." --John Kerry, shamelessly scaring
grandparents and parents that their kids would soon be marching
off to a quagmire. He followed up with a real shocker: "I will
tell you this: I will not reinstate the draft." To boot, Kerry's
"Bush-might-reinstate-the-draft" rhetoric is already the talk on
university campuses across the nation.

Finally, an adept campaign maneuver from the Kerry team? Almost,
but not quite.

The truth is, there really is legislation currently pending in
both chambers of Congress to reinstate the draft in the spring
of 2005. SS-89 and HR-163 are sponsored by Sen. Ernest Hollings
and Rep. Charles Rangel, respectively -- BOTH lefty Democrats
and BOTH supporters of our very own John F. Kerry.

Only one week left to take action...

On 30 September, our petition calling for John Kerry's prosecution
and disqualification from public office for "giving aid and
comfort to the enemy" in time of war will be delivered to Senate
President Richard Cheney, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and
Attorney General John Ashcroft. Regardless of the outcome of the
election, since John Kerry made his war record the centerpiece of
his presidential campaign, we intend to make it the centerpiece of
this call for his prosecution. Please join 160,000 fellow Patriots
who have already signed the petition, demanding John Kerry's
prosecution. Link to -- http://www.PatriotPetitions.US/Kerry

Open query...

"The Democrats purposely chose a candidate with a 22-year history
in elective office entirely barren of any distinction. Can you name
a single significant bill that bears John Kerry's mark? A single
important speech? A single legislative achievement? A single idea
of any kind associated with Kerry's name?" --Charles Krauthammer

This week's "Alpha Jackass" award:

"If he lies about his military record, he's going to lie about
his health-care plan, his education 'leave no child behind,' he's
going to lie about job creation." --DNC Head-mouth Terry McAuliffe

Occasionally, we find ourselves in total agreement with Tmac:
If John Kerry would lie about his military record, he'd lie
about anything.

This week's "Braying Jackass" award:

"Here's what would be good for the American economy -- to outsource
George W. Bush." --Demo VP candidate John Edwards campaigning in
his birth state of South Carolina

DEMO-gogue campaign quotes...

"I think it is interesting as the only senator from the class
of 1984, [John is] the only one who has not run for president,
which, of course, is not a reason to run for president." --
Maria Teresa Thiersten Simoes-Ferreira Heinz Kerry ...Huh?

Sometimes they get it right... "I smell the same New England
genius that I smelled in the Dukakis campaign in 1988. Kerry
wants to run as a man of the people, and where do they put him for
photo opportunities? Snowboarding in Sun Valley, shooting skeet
in the Ohio valley, and windsurfing off that great working-class
vacation paradise, Nantucket." --Gerald Austin, Ohio Demo campaign
consultant

In other news from the Political Front...

The media focus on Bush v. Kerry has dwarfed coverage of
congressional campaigns -- but there are some significant
campaigns to watch. You'll recall that in 2002, against all
odds, there were gains for Republicans in the House and Senate,
a midterm-election first for the majority party. This year,
not only do we expect Republicans to retain majorities in the
House and Senate, but we also expect net gains in both. In 2002,
there were more Republican Senate seats in play, yet Republicans
retained their majority. This year, there are 19 Demo Senate
seats and only 15 Republican Senate seats in play.

Two important races involving good friends of The Federalist
Patriot are neck and neck and need your help.

House candidate Lt. Colonel Greg Parke, USAF (Ret.) is endeavoring
to defeat Rep. Bernie Sanders, the only self-avowed Socialist in
the House.

Greg, the son of a WWII veteran Marine, grew up in Vermont. After
college, he joined the USAF and flew F-16s as a NATO nuclear-strike
pilot, ending his tour as Wing Chief of Training. He was
reassigned to the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force,
International Affairs, and had various assignments around the
world until his retirement in 2000, when he moved his family back
to Rutland.

Vermont Governor Jim Douglas recently endorsed Greg's candidacy,
saying, "We need Greg Parke in Congress fighting for Vermonters.
I know Greg is committed to helping support small businesses that
make Vermont work. I know that Greg will honorably represent
Vermonters on the issues that make this state special, such as
supporting our sportsmen, protecting our environment, and taking
care of our veterans who have sacrificed so much so that we can
enjoy our freedoms."

Another great Patriot, Bill Federer, is vying for Missouri's 3rd
Congressional Seat (the one being vacated by Richard Gephardt).
Bill has been associated with The Patriot for years. He is the
author of "America's God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations"
-- quotes from our Founders and other great American Patriots,
which often appear in The Patriot.

When Bill ran against Gephardt in 2000, he received more votes
than any other Gephardt opponent ever had, even though Gephardt
spent a record $6 million dollars, more than in all previous
elections combined! Most Congressional seats change hands only
when they are open. This is the first time in 28 years that this
seat is open. Missouri is trending Republican, currently enjoying
its first Republican House and Senate in 50 years.

Bill's Democrat opponent, Russ Carnahan (son of former Governor
Mel, and former Senator Jean), is a consummate Leftist, having
placed himself far left of moderate Democrats.

News from the Swamp...

In the Executive Branch, President Bush spoke before the United
Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, reminding the world body
once again of its responsibilities in forwarding and defending
freedom against the forces of terror and tyranny.

"For decades the circle of liberty and security and development has
been expanding in our world," Bush told the assembled leaders. "Now
we have the historic chance to widen the circle even further, to
fight radicalism and terror with justice and dignity, to achieve
a true peace, founded on human freedom."

Bush noted that "we are determined to destroy terror networks
wherever they operate." He also gave thanks to the many nations
that have assisted in the fight up to this point. "Freedom is
finding a way in Iraq and Afghanistan -- and we must continue to
show our commitment to democracies in those nations."

"The security of our world is found in the advancing rights of
mankind," Bush said, adding that commitment to democratic reforms
in the Middle East is essential to resolving conflict. "The
advance of liberty is the path to both a safer and better world."

Naturally, John Kerry had nothing but bile for Bush's speech and
cited what he called the President's complete lack of leadership
in Iraq. Believing that no international effort is ever truly
international unless France and Germany are on board, Kerry lashed
out at Bush for isolating America and having no credibility to lead
the world. Kerry's own lack of credibility for embracing virtually
every stand possible on Iraq must seem quite normal to him.

Case in point: Iraq came to the Swamp this week, with Iraq's
current Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's address to a joint session
of Congress Thursday. Much of the Prime Minister's speech was a
thank-you to the American people for liberating his beleaguered
country from the clutches of Saddam Hussein. Merely a day earlier,
Texas Republican Rep. Joe L. Barton, Chairman of House Energy
and Commerce Committee, had announced his intention to continue
probing the UN's "Oil for Food" financial scandal, in which
$10 billion disappeared from the fund for feeding the Iraqi
people. Stay tuned on this one -- congressional investigations,
using the Iraqi-held paper trail, may go where the UN-sponsored
"in-house" review may fear to tread.

On the Hill, when it comes to managing Washington's federal
bureaucracy, who would you think is best suited to the task -- a
President with an MBA who stresses the importance of accountability
through performance or a Northeastern liberal whose scant reform
proposals revolve around what kind of breaks he can deliver to
federal unions? (That's what we thought, too.)

John Kerry doesn't have much of a plan for managing the federal
government, but he does know that he wants to dismantle President
Bush's management agenda, which has introduced competitive sourcing
to the federal job marketplace and forced the government to become
results-oriented. Concepts like competing for jobs and worker
accountability are common in the private sector but relatively
rare in government circles, that is until Bush brought some
real-world business sense to the scene.

True to that Demo instinct to break what's already been fixed,
candidate Kerry has made promises to federal union-leaders to bring
an end to all the reforms. He seeks to put a stop to contractor
bidding for federal work and also vows to halt any attempts to
privatize government operations. And he's not alone.

This week, the House voted for a 3.5% pay raise for federal
employees and also moved to roll back the rules on federal
contracting. The measures enjoyed wide support on both sides
of the aisle, with many representatives reluctant to upset the
federal-jobs apple cart in an election year.

There's also talk in the Senate of legislation to curb the
unlimited fundraising and spending power of the 527 groups. But
don't expect anything to change in time for the November election.

Not a moment too soon, late Thursday night the House passed
extension of a package of $146 billion over 10 years in middle
class tax cuts, including the child tax credit, and reducing the
marriage penalty. The measurer passed overwhelmingly with a 339-65
vote in the House, quickly followed by a 92-3 vote in the Senate.
Once signed, this will mark President Bush's fourth tax cut in
as many years. The Patriot reminds our elected representatives
once again: while we continue to support additional tax cuts,
these cuts must be matched or exceeded by reductions in federal
spending. As noted above, a touch of fiscal restraint in a second
Bush term would be a welcome reprieve from non-security related
federal expansion.

In addition, the upper chamber approved Rep. Porter J. Goss to
become the next Director of the CIA, on a 77-17 vote. Goss, a
former CIA analyst and Army intelligence officer, should provide
some necessary redirection for U.S. intelligence services.

Finally, in these waning days of the 108th Session, Congress
has found time to pass spending bills to keep the government
running through to the new fiscal year, which begins October
1. Discretionary spending this year is expected to be well above
the $821 billion ceiling set by the White House...even without
the pay raise that Congress voted for itself.

>From the warfront with Jihadistan...

As expected, the International Atomic Energy Agency gave
Iran only a mild rebuke last Friday following its meeting in
Vienna. Rejecting the harder line desired by the United States,
the IAEA's resolution "expressed concern" over Iran's many
discrepancies and called on Iran to explain itself before the
25 November IAEA meeting. The IAEA resolution's only concrete
demand was that Iran cease all uranium-enrichment activity
as a sign of good faith, pending the November meeting. Iran's
reply was immediate and unmistakable: "The Islamic Republic will
never accept limitations on our right to enrich uranium." Iran
backed that statement with the announcement that it was resuming
work to convert some 40 tons of uranium yellowcake (a slightly
processed form of uranium ore) into uranium-hexaflouride gas,
a direct precursor to the highly-enriched uranium needed for
nuclear weapons. Iran's leaders continue to insist that the Non
Proliferation Treaty allows them to enrich uranium (it does, for
peaceful uses), but rejects the NPT's corresponding requirement
of full transparency, i.e., full access for IAEA monitors (to
ensure only peaceful use). Nuclear experts on all sides agree that
40 tons of yellowcake could provide sufficient highly-enriched
uranium for several nuclear weapons.

And by coincidence, Wednesday marked the start of Iran's annual
Holy Defense Week, with parades and other displays of Iran's
military might. Prominent in the parade were Iranian ballistic
missiles, including the new SHAHAB missile that can reach any part
of Israel. The best argument for preventing Iran from achieving
nuclear-weapons capability was spelled out plainly by the Iranians
themselves. Draped over the missiles were banners declaring "Crush
America under our feet" and "Israel must be wiped off the map."

Here, we at The Patriot repeat our stated position on Iran: This
problem must be resolved by whatever means are required BEFORE
Iran achieves nuclear capability. Stay tuned...

>From the "Non Compos Mentis" Files...

The Reuters "news" service has taken exception to CanWest, a
Canadian news agency, adding the word "terrorist" to an article
distributed by Reuters. Most commonly, the words "insurgent" or
"militant" are employed by the Leftmedia in stories about car or
"suicide" bombing attacks. However, in this instance, no such word
was used at all. The original Reuters line stated: "...the al-Aqsa
Martyrs Brigades, which has been involved in a four-year-old
revolt against Israeli occupation in Gaza and the West Bank."
We detect a little bias there -- no use of "terrorists," and the
use of "revolt" and "occupation" for starters. The National Post
changed it to: "...the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a terrorist group
that has been involved in a four-year-old campaign of violence
against Israel." That is objective news.

David Schlesinger, global managing editor for Reuters, however,
cried foul: "Our editorial policy is that we don't use emotive
words when labeling someone." Hmmm. A "terrorist" is someone who
uses the modus operandi of "terrorism" -- i.e., the deliberate
targeting of civilians to achieve a political or religious
goal. That doesn't sound "emotive" to us -- but it does sound as
if someone is "Non Compos Mentis."

>From the "Village Academic Curriculum" File...

The Muskegon Area Intermediate School District in Michigan will
soon be staging a terrorism drill involving school buses. More than
60 students will be directly involved while hundreds look on. The
idea, of course, is to prepare students, administration officials,
teachers and bus drivers for a potential terrorist attack; a noble
cause. The scenario plays out as the terrorists place a bomb
inside a school bus that, when detonated, flips the bus on its
side. The only catch, however, is that the fake attack will not
be perpetrated by the likely candidates -- Islamist terrorists --
but by "Wackos Against Schools and Education who believe that
everyone should be homeschooled." Yes, that's right. Taxpayer
funds are being used to support anti-homeschooling sentiment
among public-school students.

A simple question: Just how many terrorist attacks have
homeschoolers committed lately?

Around the nation...

>From the states, Californians will find Proposition 71 on the
ballot this November asking them to fork over $3 billion in the
next ten years for stem cell research even though they are already
the most debt-ridden state in the nation. The initiative emphasizes
embryonic stem-cell research, though it provides some funding for
adult stem cell research. Adult stem cells are far more promising
for development and possible cures because they are already fully
developed and can be taken from the patient's own body, saving
thousands of dollars and the innocent lives of any embryos. Then
again, when has the Left ever let the facts stand in the way?

And consider this point: Proponents of the legislation, including
not a few Hollywonks, have already raised over $15 million in
support of the measure. That's $15 million in CAMPAIGN funds
to force taxpayers to bear the burden. That's $15 million in
CAMPAIGN funds that could have been used to privately fund the
research. Imagine that -- science without government funding. How
hypocritical can these folks get?

Louisiana voters this week overwhelmingly approved a constitutional
amendment unambiguously defining marriage as the union of one
man and one woman, demonstrating their determination to defend
this sacred institution from those who would pervert, debase
and ultimately destroy it. This determination was previously
exhibited in the enactment of a Covenant Marriage law in 1997.
These legislative actions constitute tactical advances intended
to fortify traditional marriage and to roll back the culture
of divorce, placing Louisiana on the front line of the battle
to preserve an essential bulwark of our liberty and a precious
legacy of our cultural inheritance.

Around the world...

Offering nothing more than endless bureaucracy, the UN Security
Council passed a resolution Saturday threatening Sudan with
economic sanctions (the horror!) for the genocide occurring in
Darfur. The resolution also calls upon Secretary General Kofi
Annan to create a commission to decide whether the genocide in
Darfur is in fact genocide. Arab militias known as Janjaweed
have killed tens of thousands, raped women and girls, destroyed
crops, polluted water and forced over one million people from
their lands. We didn't need a commission to figure that out. The
U.S. State Department did not officially recognize the genocide
until last week.

And last...

Ever wonder what some retired folks do with all that spare
time? Well, we recently received this comment from one of our
elder-Patriots explaining what they do for fun. "I drove to a
coffee shop on Broadway last Wednesday. I was only there for a
few minutes, but when I came out, there was a foot-patrol officer
issuing a parking ticket. I walked right up to him and complained,
'Come on, copper, how about giving a senior citizen a break?'
He glared at me over his ticket book and continued writing. So I
called a name, and it was not his surname. He glared at me again
and then said he was adding a citation for 'worn tires.' So I
upped the ante and by telling him, 'I am going to sign a complaint
against you for harassment. You targeted my car for a ticket just
because it has a Kerry-Edwards sticker on it.' He replied by
giving me his badge number, then called his dispatcher to see if
the car had outstanding tickets -- which of course it did. With a
big grin, he said to me, 'Granny (I really hate it when people I
don't know call me "granny"), you will have to find another ride
home because I am having this vehicle towed.' So I just snarled
at him and walked around the corner and down the block to where
my car -- the one with the 'Flush the Johns!' sticker on it --
was parked."

Publisher's Note:
