October 11, 2004 on this day: In 732, Frankish leader Charles Martel defeated a Muslim army at the Battle of Tours in France. In the seventh century Arab tribes, united under the new religion of Islam, began wars of conquest. They believed they were engaged in a holy war to spread their faith. They quickly overran the Persian Empire, conquered much of the Byzantine Empire, and invaded Europe. In the east they extended their territory into India and to the borders of China. After taking North Africa and most of Spain they crossed into France. Martel and his Christian warriors halted their advance with the victory at Tours. This victory helped Martel create a new dynasty that would establish the powerful Frankish state. Premium Subscribers read more!
