Bears' Bye Doesn't Cure Injury Woes

The Chicago Bears, resting up on their bye week, were able to sit down and watch
Sunday night's
game between the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/W9RT0444A11D62949E17F3F4011D40
at FedEx Field to prepare to face the Redskins this coming Sunday at Soldier Field.
Thus,
first-year Bears Coach Lovie Smith's first order of business
when the club returns to work today will be to guard against
overconfidence.

The Bears, though, have plenty of problems of their own. They have lost two straight
games
and are 1-3, and they're without second-year quarterback Rex
Grossman because of his season-ending knee injury. Jonathan
Quinn is scheduled to make his second straight start in
Grossman's place, and Chad Hutchinson -- signed after Grossman
was hurt -- could move past rookie Craig Krenzel
this week into the backup role.

Rex Tucker takes over at left guard for injured veteran Ruben Brown, and the Bears
probably
will emphasize quicker, shorter passes to try to help Quinn.
They have a talented receiver in former first-round draft choice
David Terrell, but he has mixed flashes of productivity with
bouts of immaturity since inheriting the No. 1 wideout role when
the Bears traded Marty Booker to Miami for top pass-rushing
defensive end Adewale Ogunleye just before the season. The Bears
averaged 152 rushing yards per game in their first three
contests but ran for only 32 yards in a 19-9 loss to
Philadelphia eight days ago.

The Chicago defense should get back middle linebacker Brian Urlacher this week. He
has missed
two games -- ending a string of 64 consecutive starts -- since
aggravating a pulled hamstring that he suffered on the first day
of training camp. He's unlikely to be at full speed for the rest
of the season but probably will be cleared Wednesday to play
this week.

Hunter Hillenmeyer did well as Urlacher's replacement and likely
will remain in the lineup at strong-side linebacker. Rookie
cornerback Nathan Vasher has impressed the coaching staff
filling in for injured veteran Jerry Azumah, who could return
this week after undergoing surgery in August to have a herniated
disk in his neck repaired but might not be ready to play
full-time
or resume his kick-returning duties.

So Close Together, Worlds Apart -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/W9RT0444A06262949E17F3F4011D40 Washington's loss was
especially demoralizing
because the Ravens have, in recent years, come to represent so
many attractive qualities that the Redskins conspicuously
lacked. Like so many things, that was supposed to change with
Joe Gibbs's arrival. But it hasn't.
