The main attraction was a dizzying lineup of presentations from Gartner analysts that ranged from visionary thoughts on the future of IT (it's not looking pretty) to hard-nosed recommendations on when to move to VoIP (around 2006) and what type of Wi-Fi access points to deploy (802.11a/g). There was no shortage of buzzwords - Gartner's big theme this year is that the industry is moving to a new way of building and distributing applications. If you're not familiar with terms like service oriented architecture and service oriented business applications, the Gartner gurus suggest you start studying. Unlike shows that feature longwinded keynote addresses, Gartner analysts grilled Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Sun CEO Scott McNealy, Intel CEO Craig Barrett and Cisco President and CEO John Chambers on stage. Ballmer took some heat on the issue of security, but he maintained Microsoft has made "a boatload of progress" over the past few years. He disputed the notion that Linux is somehow inherently more secure than Windows because it's not as big of a target for hackers. "There's no safety in picking the unpopular product," Ballmer said. On the show floor, Avaya showed off a Session Initiation Protocol- based VoIP phone with both a Wi-Fi and GSM chip, so that it can be used on the LAN at work and then handed off to the cellular network outside of work. Nortel demonstrated its Multimedia Communication Server, which uses a presence-based database to indicate which co-workers are available for videoconferencing, instant messaging or voice calls. It can then be set up on the fly via softphones. Polycom showed off an H.323-based desktop-to-desktop videoconferencing system, plus integration with Microsoft's Live Communication Server. Users said they're drawn to this show by the combination of tactical and strategic sessions. "You need to do an occasional sanity check at a high level," said Gregory Fraser, who works in the IT department at the CIA. Fraser said his job is "human capital management," which means making sure IT employees have the training and career paths they need.
