Ida, the so-called love bug is a plague that hit Florida in the late
60's. They are not really love bugs, but airplane bugs because they
fly United! And there is no love, because the female, which is bigger
than the male, hauls him around until he dies, then hunts another
male. Something like a few of our ladies do with their men. Birds
won't eat them, and when they splatter on your car's paint it is wise
to scrub them off, or, as Possum said, paint remover flows in their
tiny bodies. When I was traveling in the sixties, the hood of my ford
van was eaten through by the acid of their bodies. I had to stop and
clean the windshield so I could see to drive a few more miles. So,
you see, they ain't LOVE bugs. Folks hate 'em!! Thank God they are
not so bad any more, but now come along twice a year instead of just
once.
