Bush accused the Democrat of "shameful" second-guessing in the face of threats by America's deadly foe. The broadcast of the bin Laden tape jolted the campaign's closing days, accentuating the terrorism theme with a reminder of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and Kerry revived his contention that Bush missed an opportunity to capture or kill bin Laden during the Afghan war. MCCAIN: BIN LADEN VIDEO SHOWS NEED TO RE-ELECT BUSH U.S. Sen. John McCain said the Osama bin Laden video flogging the country's foreign policies that aired Friday is a strong argument for the need to re-elect President George W. Bush. The Republican Party star from Arizona swooped through Naples on Friday night to cheer the Collier County GOP faithful at a public event at the Telford Center at Naples Community Hospital. CASTOR, MARTINEZ DUEL OVER JOBS, IRAQ IN FIGHT FOR VOTES PANAMA CITY � Democrat Betty Castor and Republican Mel Martinez tangled over jobs and the war in Iraq again Friday as both appealed to voters in the Florida Panhandle in their tight race for the U.S. Senate. Castor focused on economic issues, promising to secure manufacturing jobs that are at risk of being sent overseas, and took a swipe at Martinez for outsourcing by La-Z-Boy Inc. Martinez is on the company's board of directors. BOARD WANTS ANSWERS ON LACK OF RULES FOR EXTRA CREDIT Slackers in some Collier County classrooms get easy extra credit, such as by wearing purple on test day, forking over canned goods or attending the volleyball game of a teacher, who happens to be the coach. It appears the School District's policy on awarding extra credit is all over the map. More importantly, several bonus assignments appear to have little to do with helping students master an academic subject, which could lead to grade inflation. That is what Collier County School Board member Kathleen Curatolo says she wanted to build at a board meeting this week to set goals for the new superintendent. Holding such an important meeting in a bank rather than a public administrative center, with ample meeting and parking space and live TV cameras, is at odds with that mission. Little Rock, Ark.-based Equity Broadcasting plans to start a local Univision affiliate and another Univision-owned network, TeleFutura, in the area. Comcast and Time Warner carry Univision, but those are national feeds with no local programming. Equity does not have deals with the two cable providers to carry the local affiliate but is pursuing it, said Gregory Fess, senior vice president.
