Warming Up to Hot Spots

Some time back, the Wi-Fi Alliance coined the term "Wi-Fi is
Everywhere" as part of its campaign to push the adoption of
wireless networking. It succeeded. Today, you rarely have to
walk farther than down the street to find wireless broadband
access at a hot spot. However, I still find myself the rare
few who are willing to boot up and attempt serious work at a
hot spot. A recent trip to Cincinnati reminded me why.

Opinion: Coffee, Tea or Wi-Fi?

1. Wi-Fi for Christmas

Free Wi-Fi is becoming reality in a growing number of
cities. San Francisco plans to make free wireless computer
access available at housing projects and community centers,
while Rio Rancho, N.M., will be giving Wi-Fi to its
residents for Christmas.

2. Trust in Mobile & Wireless

While Intel, IBM and NTT DoCoMo work to develop a
specification based on Microsoft's "Palladium" initiative to
secure mobile devices, Newbury Networks has released its
WiFi Watchdog 4.0 to enhance security on wireless networks.
eWEEK.com takes a look at the new handheld spec while eWEEK
Labs reviews Newbury Network's new product.

3. Sun Mulls Pilot to Test Own RFID Compliance; Vodafone Makes
Sun Its Preferred IT Vendor

As an IT vendor for the US Department of Defense, Sun is
undertaking a study of metallic environments and wireless
interference on RFID. That's just one new initiative Sun
announced last week. The company also announced a global
purchasing agreement with Vodafone, which means that
Vodafone is selecting Sun as its preferred IT vendor of
choice.
