Today's focus: Readers create their ultimate wireless device,
Part 1

By Keith Shaw

The votes are in! Of course, we were not talking about the votes
in the presidential election - we're talking about our informal,
very unscientific poll regarding your ultimate wireless device
(see newsletter link below).

We asked readers to send in their list of the 10 biggest
features they'd like to see if they could create the "ultimate
wireless device." We got a great response (as always), and got a
bunch of great ideas. If there are any phone or PDA
manufacturers reading this, we have got the device for you. All
you have to do now is make it and sell it for a low price (or as
one reader suggested, give it away free...).

We had a four-way tie in terms of the top feature. In no
particular order, then, the top features are:

* Large, lighted color screen.
* Phone (global phone was suggested, as well as VoIP
integration).
* Synchronization - whether it is over-the-air, easy PC synch or
easy document synchronization.
* Great battery life (including the ability to hot swap
batteries).

Next up was a calendar/contact list, cited by many as a
"must-have." Other features that received multiple votes
included:

* Compact, lightweight size.
* GPS locator.
* Flash card/USB stick or SD/MMC slot.
* Voice recognition.
* Keyboard or the ability to plug in a fold out keyboard.
* Wireless headset/Bluetooth.
* MP3 player.
* Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi/WAN (such as CDMA 1x or GPRS) integration.

Finally, here are the suggestions that were mentioned only once,
but valid nonetheless (we'll add these to the device with any
leftover budget money):

* Docking feature that lets you connect to a laptop to project
on a larger screen.
* E-mail/messaging.
* 5G bytes or higher storage.
* 1 megapixel camera (no higher than 2 megapixels).
* Printing connectivity.
* Web browser that works.
* Fewer moving parts.
* 512M bytes or higher internal memory.
* Better calendar and PIM features.
* Standardized e-book reader.
* Itinerary software.

Many readers thought that a camera was either "gimmicky" or
useless (because of the low resolution), and others felt that
the storage provided by add-in cards would be better than
sticking a high-capacity hard drive on the device. We'll take a
look at some reader "verbatims" in the next newsletter.

Thanks again to all the readers who took the time to chime in,
hopefully the manufacturers will read this and create devices
with all of these top features.
