Secret Cisco Code for Sale Cheap

Pssst, buddy, wanna buy some secret Cisco firewall code? For
a nominal fee, you can own the keys to corporate networks
worldwide. Or maybe you want the Napster source, or
intrusion-detection source code from Enterasys. It's all for
sale by a shadowy organization over the Web. Who are they?
Where are they from? We've got detailed coverage about the
group itself, along with the Cisco firewall software that's
on the block.

Scary Spyware Bedfellows

What do you get when a purported anti-spyware company cozies
up to a major adware vendor? A slimy, sticky situation that
misleads users and is bad for the industry. We still don't
know exactly how much money changed hands, but Aluria now
gives passing marks to WhenU--which it previously flagged as
nastyware. It's as if Norton cozied up with Bagle. Our story
details this sleazy situation--but if you're using Aluria,
better switch to a safer product (I recommend Spy Sweeper
from WebRoot). Plus, we look at the recent anti-spyware
legislation passed by the House and speculate on where it'll
end up.

E-Voting Passes the Test

It wasn't foolproof, but Tuesday's election seemed to prove
the e-voting concept. Sure, there were touch-screen flaws,
power overloads and faulty machines. But things tended to
work pretty well. Our story details what worked and what
didn't.

Satellite Radio Futures

Will Howard Stern change the face of satellite radio? Lance
Ulanoff's not so sure. He's a big Howard fan, while I could
care less. For me, it's the recent addition of Major League
Baseball that will rocket satellite radio into
orbit--starting next spring. But for a look at what XM and
Sirius need to do, along with where they are now, don't miss
his commentary.

A Nifty Workhorse Cell Phone

Looking for a neat phone that won't break the bank? If you
don't need a camera, the entry-level Soho from Kyocera is

details what works, and what doesn't.

Next Battle: Google vs. Microsoft

Remember Netscape? What about Novell? Those were all
companies that tried to battle Microsoft--and lost. Next up,
according to John C. Dvorak: Google. The search-engine
company is rapidly invading Microsoft's turf, and a browser
apparently will be next. Find out why John thinks Google
versus Microsoft will be a battle for the ages--along with
who he thinks might win.

Alarming Google Flaw

Have you tried out the nifty new Google Desktop Search
product? If so, you might be putting your files at risk
unnecessarily. It turns out that the search product is too
good--it'll actually search and decrypt encrypted files. And
that means anyone using your system can see passwords,
secret folders and other things. Our article details the
problem and comes up with a way around it.

GPS Indoors?

That's what a new GPS startup claims. U-blox says its
SuperSense technology can actually deliver a GPS location
fix indoors. If so, it'll be an amazing breakthrough for the
location technology. Our story details the claims, along
with when it'll be available.

Pentium 4 system, but don't want to spend a lot? You're in

ExtremeTech meat grinder. Four use Intel's low-cost 915
chipset, while another features the 865PE. What's it all
mean? Our story has the gory details--but you're not going
to spend a lot for a powerful board.

The Making of the President, 2008

Now that 2004 is history, what about the next election? It's
a good bet that the technologies Howard Dean harnessed will
be even more prevalent--and potent--the next time around.
Our thought-provoking article explores how a future
candidate might just bypass the parties altogether, using
community and the Web to build a political machine. Great
reading for the election hangover!
