One measure that distinguishes XP-style testing from others is the
inventory of unsatisfied tests. XP teams typically have very few tests
that aren't working at any one time. Partly this is because the writing
of the tests is defered until just before implementation. Partly this is
because the team works hard to keep the tests working once they pass the
first time. I think it would be interesting to compare a waterfall-style
project with an XP-style project with respect to the inventory of
failing tests--how many tests are failing, how long do they remain
failing, how much priority does the team place on fixing them?
