Ben, as I said in my original posting "Possibly for production cars
but this was repeatedly disputed by Graham Arnold (Lotus Sales
Director at the time) "

As Graham was sales director throughout most of the 60's until the
early 70's I'd guess he really ought to have known the true story. He
never wavered from this line over the years at any stage despite being
repeatedly asked - even for instance when he was with other Lotus
factory personalities during informal Club Lotus talks.

As you might guess I'm definitely of the "production car black badges
are nothing to do with Jim Clark school" but significantly the F1
cars post early 68 - the 49 R4 is the last I've seen in yellow and
green, until around the mid 80's always seemed to wear black and
silver badges (and black and gold in the JPS era)

I reckon that either yellow and green enamel were just in worldwide
short supply and Lotus basically decided to save money.
