1. AOL to Be Split Into Four Units
>From The Washington Post (Topic: AOL), Nov. 9:
(Registration Required)
America Online Inc. yesterday put new leaders in senior
posts and revamped its corporate structure, undertaking a
sweeping overhaul just one month before the company plans to
slash costs by firing more than 700 employees. The
far-reaching changes, directed by chief executive Jonathan
F. Miller, will result in the departures of three of the
Internet firm's most senior executives from its Dulles
headquarters. In an e-mail to thousands of employees, Miller
made it clear that he intends to shake-up an online giant
that has been criticized for moving too slowly and not doing
enough to foster teamwork.

>From The New York Times (Topic: Microsoft and Novell), Nov. 9:

3. E-Voting Returns Mixed Results
>From eWeek (Topic: E-voting), Nov. 8:
Makers of electronic voting machines declared victory for
their technology in this year's presidential election, but
computer scientists, who collected thousands of reports of
voting glitches, said the results may reveal a different
outcome.

4. Circuit City Makes E-commerce Part of its Turnaround
>From USA Today (Topic: E-commerce), Nov. 7:
Alan McCollough, chief executive of Circuit City Stores,
recalls hovering over an employee who tapped on a computer
keyboard and showed him how the retailer could showcase its
products online. "Instantly, the wheels would start to turn
in your head," he said. "It was so much better than someone
saying, 'Guess what, the Web's going to change your life.'"

5. File-Sharing Network Thrives Beneath the Radar
>From Reuters (Topic: File Sharing), Nov. 6:
A file-sharing program called BitTorrent has become a
behemoth, devouring more than a third of the Internet's
bandwidth, and Hollywood's copyright cops are taking notice.

6. Big Brother's Passport to Pry
>From Business Week (Topic: Privacy), Nov. 5:
The U.S. is moving closer to requiring citizens to have an
identity card that could be scanned from a distance. By the
end of 2005, U.S. passports will come with embedded
radio-tag chips -- and Congress is considering mandating
similar technology in driver's licenses. The government
argues that the changes will make America safer from
terrorists. But privacy advocates are appalled, fearing that
the information could be stolen and misused.

7. A New, More Sneaky Phishing Attack
>From MSNBC.com (Topic: Phishing), Nov. 5:
Phishing scams, already one of the main nemeses on the Net,
have apparently just become even more sneaky -- and
ingenious. Now, it appears phishing authors are borrowing
some time-tested tactics from computer virus writers to
steal personal information from e-mail users.

America Online customers were convicted in the nation's
first felony prosecution of internet spam distributors.

after convicting them of three counts each of sending
e-mails with fraudulent and untraceable routing information.
