ConnecTel claims Cisco is using without compensation a set of technologies that ConnecTel founder Allen Kaplan invented in the 1990s. ConnecTel is seeking unspecified damages and attorney's fees as well as an injunction to stop the alleged infringement. At the heart of the complaint is an intelligent data routing system that can choose the best data path and transmission method in real time, based on multiple factors including bandwidth, availability, security and the user's priority. Kaplan applied for patents on the technology in 1996. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1104patensuit.html> Verizon Wireless and Nextel Communications said they have reached an agreement to resolve all their legal disputes. Nextel also agreed to forego any trademark and other ownership rights to the phrase "Push To Talk," "PTT," and all related "PUSH" names. Verizon Wireless has agreed not to oppose the FCC's decision in July to realign the 800-MHz band, including Nextel's receipt of spectrum in the 1.9-GHz band. <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2004/1104verinext.html> MCI recorded a $3.4 billion third-quarter loss, due mainly to a write-off of the value of its assets. MCI took a $3.5 billion noncash charge. The $3.4 billion loss for the quarter ended Sept. 30 compares to a loss of $55 million in the third quarter 2003. Net loss for the quarter totaled $10.65 per share. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1104mcirepor.html> _______________________________________________________________ To contact: Jim Duffy Jim Duffy is managing editor of Network World's service provider equipment coverage <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/>.
