I had thought about going to the slabs myself, but from the sounds of it,
not sure now.
People dumping trash all over the place is nothing new. It's been done
since forever.
Looking at some of the land around Willow Springs (Near Rosamond
California) I see trash that has been there since at least the early 1900's,
if not longer.
I should take some pictures of what I have found and put them on my web
site.
All kinds of stuff, from rusty old cans, broken bottles, to parts of farm
and other implements.
Much of this is on what should be a preserve, and not a dump.
I am, slowly, picking up assorted trash on my own property. Most is not a
big problem, or toxic waste, so I am presently placing it in a deep pit that
needs filling. Mainly cardboard and a few broken bottles, as well as some
brush that's not practical to recycle, and I don't wish to try burning.
At the slabs, maybe if more people took an interest, something could be
done to clean it up.
Granted, it will be harder to do things with the bigger stuff, but mayhap
if serial numbers and such were tracked down, those responsible could be
made to pay for some of the cleanup.
Otherwise, we could possibly lose the right to use the land.

Don't just complain, pick up some of the trash and dispose of it properly.

Not all of us from the 60's and back are hippies, and fewer still smoke
pot...

 YMMV

Yes. As a retired environmental engineer (n wildlife biologist) who has
conducted many analyses on garbage disposal areas and landfills, there is a
right place and a wrong place to deposit trash. A landfill is generally
located over impermeable soils or lined in such a manner as to preclude
groundwater contamination, waterborne (seepage) spread to adjacent soils and
non-target areas, and garbage "sprawl". The Slabs may represent an extreme
example of such sprawl; it is likely the many mini-garbage dumps,
incineration piles, and trash piles spread over the area constitutes an
unhealthy, possibly dangerous environment. The burned-out RVs, trailers,
buses, and vehicles may be considered an "attractive nuisance" and, as such,
are a danger to children and everyone else.
