A Cheaper Windows for All?
If Microsoft can sell a less-expensive version of Windows XP
in the developing world, why can't Americans buy it too?
What have Thailand, Malaysia and Russia done to help
Microsoft become the company it is today?
Americans and Europeans have long been subsidizing
Microsoft's global adventures, so if there's a better deal
out there, don't we deserve it too?
Earlier this month, Microsoft began offering a Window XP
"Starter Edition" to customers in Thailand. There are plans
to offer additional localized versions of Windows in
Southeast Asian markets as well as India and Russia.

The Report

1. WordPerfect Killed Itself
When Microsoft and Novell recently came to a $536 million
settlement of their long-running legal battle, they agreed
not to agree on one issue: Microsoft's alleged
anti-competitive practices toward WordPerfect, which Novell
later purchased (and now belongs to Corel Corp.). That case
is now expected to go to trial.
Mary Jo Foley has already weighed in on this and I agree
with her that Novell has a hard case to prove. While I
believe Microsoft did anti-competitive things--like creating
Office in the first place, thereby nuking several
presentation graphics companies--it was mostly WordPerfect
that did itself in.

2. Help Me Pick Codies Finalists
Again this year, I have been asked to serve on the panel of
judges selecting the finalists for the Software and
Information Industry Association's Codie awards. This is a
fairly big deal in the software industry and I am honored to
take part. The winners are chosen by a vote of the
organization's membership from the finalists I'll help
select.
I'd like to offer blog readers a chance to influence my
deliberations. Below is a list of the nominees in the
category I'm working on this year. If you have any comments
on one or more of these products, I'd love to hear from you.
Please include your e-mail address with your comment so I
can get back in touch if I have questions.
