I did find a note about the original aqueduct in Priestley's Navigable
Rivers and Canals (on http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/jim.shead/PNRC0521.htm).

This says the canal (the original contour canal) had an aqueduct of twelve
arches of 22 feet span each, over the valley at Brinklow - but no mention of
housing.

Seems a bright idea to provide housing (you've already got the roof and
sides!) so why didn't it catch on? (Too many leaks?)

Hogreve's illustrations really are gorgeous - I can feel an article coming
on for the waterways press, if I could get permission for reproducing them:

Here's the list of tables:

I  -  map of the system in 1777, with canals planned for
Northwich-Knutsford-Macclesfield, then via Stockport to Manchester (with a
branch from Stockport to the Bridgewater at Sale), a canal from Reading to
Brentford to Brentford, and a choice of two routes from Preston to Kendal.

II - bridges over Thames at Maidenhead and over Charwell at Oxford, sluices
at Boston

III - aqueduct at Brinklow (although I see now it's labelled "aufgegebnes
project" - abandoned project)

IV - Newbold and Fenny Compton tunnels; coal boats, "little locks"

V - Bridge at Stourport over Severn, and basins

VI - Wharves at Birmingham, projected canal Langley Bridge to the Trent

VII  -  Runcorn double locks down to the Mersey; "passage boats" for
travellers (with a section for distinguished travellers)

VIII - Castlefield - including underground outlet for the water that drives
the waterwheel. Aqueduct over the Irwell at Barton.

IX - Leeds & Liverpool double locks

X - Aqueduct over the Aire (Great Cottingley). Sketch of Bingley 5-rise.
Witham sluices / lock at Boston.

XI - St Omer (France)
