Protecting the Waterway heritage through recognition.
Dear Colleagues,
Following the Smethwick coal chutes incident it has become very clear
that a small group of like minded observant individuals can be an
asset to the Waterway heritage.
Although demolition of the chutes at Smethwick is not prevented, a
full recognition of the site has been achieved. The site contained
far more than the chutes and now those other features are to be
conserved for the future.
Already "hot on the heels" of Smethwick another site has been located
where full protection may not be in place, once again the site has
more to offer than can be seen.
British Waterways and ourselves recognised the value of this input
are both keen to see the recognition continue.
We propose that a small, efficient group of "key" enthusiasts is
formed under the name of "CanalScape-BCN". The purpose being to
identify sites on the BCN and its immediate surrounding waterways
which need protection and highlighting to prevent undue damage,
demolition or improper change.
Whilst independent the group will report directly in the first
instance to British Waterways and be responsible for clear and
correct interpretation.
There is much specialist knowledge on hand sometimes overlooked by
professionals who rely on little background information when
assessing sites.
A clear example was the loss of the Warehouse on the Redrow
development in Wolverhampton.
Please note that this is not a chat group, it is for information
gathering purposes. If you know of something please post a picture if
possible in the photos section with a description posted in the files
section under the same name.
CanalScape-BCN will allow public observation of the groups findings
at low cost. It also allows the group to identify who is really
interested in what is being carried out.
If the project is successful it could form the basis for a number of
groups to be brought together Nationally.
We need a strong membership, made up of for example British Waterways,
BCNS, LHCRT, other waterway users and knowledgable enthusiasts, all
to work together.
Please join the group , it is free and requires little time, please
do include some details of your job etc if you wish, it will help us
evaluate the interest.
Regards,
Vaughan Welch & Laurence Hogg
