Picked up Narrowboat Zinfandel on Friday.  Nice little 46 foot
Sea Otter.  Like Andy Greener's Whisper, this boat has a Beta PropGen
(cocooned engine, with hydraulic drive and 240V generator).  However,
unlike Andy's, where the ProgGen is under the bed), we were told that
on this Sea Otter, it was necessary to place the Beta under the rear deck.
This makes for a larger (8 foot) rear deck, and so cabin space maybe a
couple of feet shorter than one might expect in a boat this size.
However it is quite comfortable for the two of us.

The engine is not totally silent, but underway, the noise of the
water churned by the prop is louder than any engine noise.

Friday, had an excellent meal on the patio overlooking the river at the
Bridge Hotel at Clayhithe.  Prices were reasonable and they were doing
a brisk business.  Backlog on food was 30-45 minutes, but ours was worth
the wait.

Tonight (Sat.) moored in Ely near the Cathedral and a big Tesco.

The river Cam, and the Great Ouse from the Cam to Ely, are generally at
least as wide as two narrow canals.  At the Cambridge end, there are
rowers to contend with, but this is not really a problem.  The river
is not as interesting (between Cambridge and Ely) as a narrow canal
in that it passes mainly through empty fields, with few locks, towns,
or pubs.  But it is pleasant, nonetheless (though today certainly
could have been warmer - needed earmuffs again).

That's all for now,
