Ah well, I wouldn't normally watch Neighbours, but all the lads at
work watch it during lunch (since it follows the lunchtime news, which
we watch as it's work).

It was the same when I was @ the fire station, I well remember the minority interest programmes [such as waterway related ones] that went to the wall when these accursed Aussie soaps first infected our screens. Cheap bubblegum for the eyes.
Post 23:00 was a veritable Aladdin's Cave during the week for the discerning viewer---does anyone remember Anthony Burton's "Voyage Between Two Seas" where he entered the inland waterways from the Humber Estuary, into the Aire & Calder etc. eventually to the Irish Sea @ Liverpool?
Another gem was "Living on water" a couple that bought a dutch barge in Holland, through the Netherlands system, across the channel, Thames estuary, Grand Union to Uxbridge for a new [raised] ceiling back to below Tower Bridge for a short-term mooring. Thence to St Petersburg in Russia----fascinating stuff----& on @ 04:20 'coz a soap had taken all the daytime slots!  Thank God for video!
  Barry.
