It actually happened to me a few years ago in Felis Catus II  (powered by a
BMC 1800), a fw minutes after setting off (single-handed) for home from the
Milton Keynes "National".  It was a truly terrifying experience.  The clouds
of white smoke were immense  -  so much so that a passer-by called the fire
brigade.  The only control I had was to put the gearbox into neutral so that
the boat at least slowed down to a stop.  The damage to the engine was such
that it would probably have been cheaper to buy a replacement engine than
have it rebuilt.
