To me a considerable disincentive to cruising the HNC is the uncertainty whether you will be allowed through Standedge Tunnel due to being oversize. Tim >From my acquaintance with the western side, I would have thought this was a perfectly acceptable out-and-back trip (like the Peak Forest or Ashby) if people didn't want to or couldn't tackle the tunnel. Having had a fairly intimate acquaintance with the tunnel, I wouldn't want to risk damage to my boat by having it towed through- I don't know why H&S decided boaters could not tackle it on their own as my feeling is that the tunnel is in itself no more dangerous than Harecastle, as the access for rescuers balances out the more irregular profile - and there's no risk of colliding with some moron coming the other way!
