Right you are. I suppose I was thinking of the mud as an effect of rain,
but it's true that none fell while we were at Tring.
Today's attempt to visit the Linlithgow Canal Centre turned into a drive-
by, as some festival (on a Tuesday?) closed the town centre and placed
"no parking" pyramids all over the roads, including the vicinity of the
canal centre. Better success was had in visiting the Edinburgh Canal
Centre at Ratho, but we found the prices at the Bridge Inn on the "new
menu" too high - lunch and dinner prices there are the same, and in the
teens.
Then left canal country (and Scotland) to sleep in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
