Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply. She spent a lot of time on holiday on
narrowboats with her parents (I believe a lot of her summer was spent
cruising) and is keen to combine a return to that, with her own place
to live. Looking at flats for one person brings out some fairly
intimidating prices.

I've looked around online and found a few rough figures as far as
mooring costs, licenses etc go but there's nothing that I can find on
some fairly big potential costs like how long will a steel hull last,
how much would regular repairs on a well maintained 10 year old boat
be, are there regular repairs which necessitate being out of the boat
for any period of time, etc.

She'd want to be either near Radcliffe on Trent or near the city
centre, so I pointed her towards Castle Marina. I don't think she's
called them for prices or availability of mooring yet, but I was
hoping to find out laws regarding mooring on the side of the Trent and
where (if anywhere) such a thing can be done.

I've suggested that we take a walk down the canal towpath one weekend
soon to chat to folks on their boats about it, but then the wonderful
thing about an egroup is the ability to have a think before replying
:) I know many times now I've had conversations where ten minutes
later I've thought "ah, I wish I'd told them about X".

Dave
