It's very pretty above Vale Royal but the opening times are presumably still severely restricted (maybe someone locals can confirm this?). I'd suggest go up to Northwich for the night, then next day go as far down river as time allows, enjoying the beautiful countryside, and turn back in time to reach the lift for your journey up again.
